That's [probably to keep an eye out so you don't freeze up in the winter...

Yup, wired right into the house with an alarm. There is also a heated "s" shaped wire on the shadowed part of the roof on a thermostat. I just need to get a woodstove in here. Oil/kero forced air and a pellet stove. Not power outage friendly, even though I have a genny.

But if you heat with a wood stove there will be no residual heat going to your crawl space and you will freeze up on a few really cold nights so be careful...

I did hang a lamp in a similar area at the last place, and turned it on during the extreme cold. It worked better than heat tape (which seemed to always fail)

    Sump pumps.........

    stand style? ( Cheaper)
    or
    submerssible? (Wont overheat)

    also.....

I dont think I can use a basin for my particular application, since the pressure tank is a foot into the pit, being held up by a cinder block (stupid design if you ask me) so what can be an alternative to this? A screen perhaps at the intake? Thanks again!

I'm not a fan of the stand type pumps.

For sump pumps, I like the battery backup 120v ones. Basement watchdog is the brand ours is. Newer ones send texts to you when there's an issue.

So true. Consider this, the storm that knocks out the power is most likely the thing that will cause the water problem, and then you are back to square one.

 ... Running outside in the pouring rain to run power from the generator to your basement for power in the middle of the night....... Was an eye opener...

The "stand" (pedestal) type pumps are all I have ever had.
Unfortunately, MasterMech is wise for not being a fan of them.
There have been a number of instances where the float did not activate the "pump on" switch and the result of course is a flooded workshop floor. Not the end of the world in your application but I think it bit more important if you're using it for a basement. It has to be "babysat".....especially during the heavy rains/melt off times.

They also make water powered back up stumps for when the battery backup isn't enough.

I second the zoeller brand...regardless of type.
That's all my plumber buddy will install.

Right on. Our pump and tank is in an outbuilding with no heat. Usually below zero we turn a light on in the pit and that takes care of it so not a big problem.

That's how our other house was. Our truck driver suggested doing away with the heat tape and hanging a lamp. We never had a freeze up issue again!
