    Hickory is great smoker wood, but it is very strong as mentioned - have a light hand with it. Best used on short smokes or with something big like a shoulder or short ribs.

    The wood in the original post doesn't look like any Hickory I have seen, and I have seen most of the hickories. There are a few that don't grow in PA and I have not seen, so perhaps this is one of those species.
