I've removed several rows of arborvitae used as living fence because the deer decimated the bottoms that they could reach. They eat the hemlocks here, too. I've taken to pruning the row of hemlocks near the road in Jan/Feb and hauling the tops into the woods behind the house and the deer find them there pretty quick. We never used to have deer coming close to houses here but then again at that same time years ago people used to let their dogs loose. Plus this more rural area has become mostly suburban. Dogs sprayed by skunks has become cars sprayed by skunks.
Before winter..the bucks find them an easy target to beat up on woth there racks during different times of the year lol !
