Nice thing about lower btu wood is that it allows you to stretch out your higher btu wood to last longer. For every two pieces I burn of abundant pine or aspen I save a piece of oak for deep winter or all night burns when I really need it. I don’t like to waste oak for a short burn to take the chill out of the room. There’s not enough oak around my territory to just waste it on short burns.
I’m not sure who mixed up your FHC koolaid but the recipe was off. Time for an intervention before you spiral out of control seriously tho I do know how sometimes a certain score just speaks to ya.
I had a few minutes unsupervised this afternoon and ended up back at this pile with my eleven year old. I had my heart set on the ash there but it proved to be too far gone for my liking. Ended up with a halfway decent load of aspen without breaking a sweat. I forgot how easy aspen is to cut. The little MS170 tore through these in no time. I think I’ll use this for boiling maple sap in 2024. No sense in burning through my top shelf wood for that.
The fervor is waning in this 80 degree heat Bucked to length and split today. This should be enough for maple syrup season (I’m going to supplement this with a lot of my shorts/uglies to keep the fire raging when the time comes)
Made some nice splits. You getting any more? Might be a banner year for syrup come February, you should be prepared.
No need (or desire) to get more. Still have one and a half holzhausens full of pine if I need it for sap boiling. Next I have to make a pen for these splits, and one for a pile of nuggets that’s been on the ground for a couple months now.
The fervor is back again. This bigtooth aspen came down shortly after thanksgiving, but I let it lay until now. With all of my recent firewood sales, I decided it was time to bump up my inventory with some fast-drying stuff. I don’t mind burning “junk” wood for my personal stash, especially when I’m around during the day to reload the stove more often. This trunk was suspended off the ground and close to the road so ideal scrounging conditions. The 028 was on duty today but next time I hit it I’ll bring my 029 with the 20” bar, as this trunk was a little bigger than anticipated. Still the 028 did well. Seems like with every tank I run through that saw it’s getting snottier. The rings must be seating well
It's a 16" but it cuts fast on that little saw, which has quickly become my go-to "truck saw" for quick unexpected scrounges.
Good call I’m boiling now with mostly sugar maple, but the aspen I’m mixing in with it is what’s really throwing the heat. In 3 hours time I evaporated close to 13 gallons. Not bad for my Mickey Mouse backyard setup.
