Those whom burned pellets in 2008, when the gas prices went high, did the pellet prices go up too? We are buying a truckload (something we do every late summer) for stock and employees but we are getting it now. Anyone else thinking this might be a good idea to stock up now?
Not right now, but soon. At this moment, pellet shops are typically still at the highest prices of the season. At least the stores around here are. April, May timeframe is when the spring sales happen and that is generally the best price of the season, not just this year, but any year. If the pellets sold at your local HD or Lowes are of interest, some of their locations are doing fire sales right now to get them off their lots - $200/ton or a little less - probably slim pickings at this point though. Oh and friends don't let friends buy Northeast Pellets.
HD is showing out of pellets in any store around me (I'm supposed to get my delivery of 6 tons sometime today). Lowes, just put their stuff on sale for an even better price, but as ttdberg said, northeast pellets aren't that great. They are probably the 2nd coldest burning pellet I've ever tried (only thing worse was the Therma Glo's form years back). I'm talking a good 15-35 degrees colder air coming out of the stove versus the middling pellets I have used on a regular basis (Pres-tos, TSC MWP, even GS northeast blend). That being said, I'll probably take a ride up to Concord on Sunday and check out what that Lowe's has. None of the local places that carry pellets around me ever put pellets on sale in the spring.
It's nice your employer orders pellets for employees. I'm guessing there's $'s to be saved by you, sharing in a volume discount?
The employees don't save that much, but some. Buy 3 tons or more, they are $179 ton. I dunno what brand are either at lowes or home depot. We all burn energex at the shop and at home.
You can bet your hind side that pellet prices will go up. fuel up everything else goes right along with it. Then there will be an even higher demand from EU area, which likely lead to short supplies here.
Its one thing to pay higher prices for pellets when cost of oil ,electric or gas is lot lower but when all energy prices for heating goes up we get screwed $$$$ on any choice so all revelant on your heating costs Unless your a wood burner that gathers free wood.
The HD pellets are Green Supreme. The ones that were delivered to my house yesterday all had Product of Canada on their bags - so they aren't the NEWPS from the Jaffrey plant. But, if I look up the sku, it just says lignetics from CO, so it it is just pointing back to their headquarters. I'm thinking they are from the Geneva plant. These are a blend.
I really haven't seen pellet prices as compared to oil, gas, propane being a viable cost effective option for heating. I do pellets for extra warmth (sometimes to hot) and ambience. 2008 might have been different but I wasn't in the game then.
Our experience is different around here. I agree March 8th prices. Propane - I paid $5.50/gal a couple of weeks ago. At the same time I paid <$200/ton for pellets during the sale. not super premium pellets, but along the lines of what I normally burn to heat my home anyway. Up until March, electricity for air source heat pump had been running slightly under the PPM BTU.
This is the heating fuel prices chart from the state of Maine. Heating Fuel Prices | Governor's Energy Office
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) provides a calculator: https://www.maine.gov/energy/sites/maine.gov.energy/files/inline-files/Home-Heating-Calculator.xls
In Ct $304 a ton is a nearly extinct species. Average price is in the 330-340 neighborhood., and some brands now 360-370. Can only imagine October prices of diesel stays above $5 a gallon. I hope BB stores can remain under at or under 300.
Yeah, I keep looking at prices for MWP's being sold up there in Maine and get super jealous. Those are my fave's to run day in and day out.
Grabbing mine right now. Waiting for confirmation on 4/tons of Matra @ $319 each. Vendor has them covered, in their warehouse and are available. $65 delivery and they will push the pallets right into my garage. Priceless. No extra handling or the four trips to pick them myself. Freight pricing for the LaCretes, coming from Western Canada will make them scarce in the NE, going forward. I was told they will be pushing close to $465 for the 1.2 ton skid. And that's if you can get them shipped here at all. As if we don't have enough issues, rail transportation is bogged down too. The problem? NO help, can't get experienced crews. Everything is broken in 'Merica. (three weeks and counting, waiting for parts for my 2014 Subaru Forester). My plans don't include being cold this winter.
That aint free either. Takes fuel to cut it, fuel to split it and fuel to skid out out of the woods plus all the grunt labor involved. Wood don't mysteriously appear in your pile all prepped for a stove, last time I checked at least.
Not everyone burns heating oil. Around here very few actually. Least my propane is staying pretty stable, for now. No price increase so far, not that I require any, I'm at 85% on all 4 bottles.
