I am sure lots of people around here cut in the fall so they can burn the same winter, but a fair number of my neighbors are at least a year ahead and maybe more. Not everyone waits until the last minute.
I'm at least good for this year, it not more, and I won't really start until now with cutting, but I'll cut all the way through spring. I personally like cutting in winter because I hate sweating in the woods when there's better things to do outside when its nice outside.
That's me. I don't like cutting in spring or summer. For me winter time im looking for something to do outside anyways so firewood it is not because I have to but I want to. and there is no rush if I don't feel like doing that day I just throw a couple pieces in the stove and enjoy my chair
I find saws don't spook deer as does running tractors and mowers. Often the deer are in my apple trees within 60' of the mower. In the Winter, trees being cut puts browse on the ground that the deer would normally be unable to get. Cut trees equal chow for the deer so they come to the saws, not run away.
I just had a good laugh! I walked outside to take the dog for a romp just after reading this thread. The first vehicle that goes by is a neighbor with a log splitter behind his truck. I know his wood isn't for any further ahead than this winter. Atleast it's been cut and seasoning since May!! I sure hope he thinks I was laughing at something the dog did! It is tough to get ahead of the game though. My wife and I spent a good portion of late winter and spring trying to get that the elusive "third year ahead." I missed out on a bit of crappie fishing, but made up for it with morels, and BTU's. Pretty fair trade IMO
I have taken notice of the wood stacks in my suburban neighborhood. Someone on the other end of my street had a monster oak taken down, and I am surprised to see them c/s/s it in their front yard. I still by far have way more wood than anyone in my neighborhood. There are a handful more houses with about sub-cord stacks. I am very curious to meet the new oak stacker, maybe we can do a little trade because they are not burning that (hopefully!) Anytime soon. I am glad I am not the only wood junky in my hood.
