Almost through my shoulder season wood. Deep into the Linden (Basswood). Boy it make a lot of ash! I remember the cottonwood I burned year one made a lot too but I don't remember it making this much.
You wouldn't believe it, but Basswood up in this area is worth more than clear white pine right now.. The carvers just love it.
I'm learning on the fly since I'm new to this... I now know the importance of ss wood. Getting a good stack/pile of maple uglies and shorts ready for next year. I dipped into my good wood at the end of October. Luckily we have another load of ash from the father in law that I'll pick up over Christmas that's ready to go which should have us in decent shape for the entire year.
For sure that basswood is super easy to carve. Light too so good if one wants to make an airplane or two.
I like burning basswood... burns pretty quick and has a decent smell, too. I didn't notice a ton of ash buildup, but I've seen that before with walnut and some others.
