I think the rules can be different from park to park, apparently the local superintendent has a little leeway Man takes heat for firewood removal - Mount Desert Islander According to Acadia Ranger Darren Belskis, the local “Superintendent’s Compendium,” published in association with the basic regulations, allows visitors to Acadia to collect dead and down wood for use in the campgrounds at Blackwoods in Otter Creek and Seawall in Manset. Ironically, collection of any firewood within the confines of a campground itself is banned, primarily to protect live trees from being cut and stripped by uninformed visitors. The use of a chainsaw to gather wood anywhere in the park also is a federal offense.
Yes, some parks have some leeway on what they can do and what they cannot do. Most superintendents don't have the balls to make their own decisions though. Sad. btw, welcome to the forum, Coyoterun
Thanks for the welcome! I've got a couple large (40"+ DBH) ash trees that need to come down in a couple years. I'll try to document the process so I'll have some pictures to post when they're finally ready. We don't have the ash borer here yet, it's probably 3-4 years away, so I've got a little bit of time to get things ready. First I've to get the IS install finished and burning!
Well, we knew you were a good guy when we saw the IS in your signature line! Worry not if you get the borer, or when you get the borer. The wood will stay good for a long time. We got hit in 2002 and still cutting but the wood is definitley not as good as it was before. Now the trees are rotting at the root and falling over.
I've always stood by the theory that if you LOOK like you know what you're doing then the majority of the people just pass you by---a couple examples come to mind back in the college days and even as recently as my last marriage---so don a florescent vest, plop a battery operated yellow caution light on the roof, have a couple orange cones in the bed and ideally a too-small print of something on the pickup doors and don't forget your hard hat then tool along and load up and keep on agoin'!! It's the thrill of victory...gets the blood pumping!
