    New one to me a couple of years ago. I think they are a regional tree, also called a tamarack here. Pretty neat tree - it looks like a pine (with needles and cones), but changes color and drops its needles in the fall, so it is not an evergreen. They are beautiful golden color against the green pines and douglas firs in the fall.

    And when they drop the needles it makes it difficult to tell whether its dead or alive

    Yep, I cut one down in the spring thinking it was dead. Then I saw the buds, and felt guilty. :( I have plenty enough dead trees, I don't want to cut live healthy ones.

    I find tons that people have mistakingly dropped alive. Any more i go by the rule that the bark needs to be falling off it.
