Huh. If you saw what came out of my old flue system, you'd think I was cleaning every chimney in the canyon ! New pipes are breathing much better, no buildup. Hope it looks like yours when time to clean, Dave.
Not sure why, but the chimney cap gets some of creo & inside the stove behind the metal shield gets creo. Real dry wood , maybe the oil & wax in the birch bark??? But the Chimney’s good & clean
I get the same build up behind the shields, we discussed using that Simpson strap to clean it out. My old Class A was so poorly designed, I can't believe the house is still here. New Class A and a much improved smoke path should alleviate the problems I had before.
Could be from the birch bark. I get a little too at the cap, but I think that's mostly due to me not trimming back the top of the liner to be flush with the bottom of the cap. It does obstruct flow a little. I keep telling myself that I should bring up the grinder and just do it when I sweep the chimney.
My liner is not insulated. It's a 6" ss liner in a Terra cotta flue. I've got a feeling that this minor issue would be solved by dumping a bunch of insulation down the Terra cotta flue. That would keep the pipe temps from dropping much.
I hate to be a Debbie downer, but it looks like you swept a child’s sled out of the flue. Usually this means wet wood, lol
