Today felt like a good day to run the saw. I buzzed up some white ash that has been down for a couple years. Got a decent sized load of the stuff I could lift into the truck. If I can get my phone to cooperate I'll upload a pic of the stuff I couldn't lift up.
This is the stuff that I need to split before moving. There is another trunk about the same diameter that is around 12 feet long that I haven't cut up yet. Think I'll be renting a splitter for the big stuff.
It took every inch of bar I had to get those rounds cut. I put a 24" bar on the 3700. That's a bit more than it likes to pull, but I kept mashing the manual oiler to keep it oiled up. The other trunk is a bit bigger around than that one. That one will be even more fun to get through.
I just worked a maple about that size this past week with an 18" bar on a little ms251. After struggling with the first cut, I decided to noodle through it first then went down from the top only having to cover half of the trunk. I used a wedge on the first cut to keep it open and after that one the trunk was suspended in the middle so I just worked in from both sides. I need a bigger saw for next year but it did get the job done... Just not very fast..lol..
If you are splitting by hand, you can easily split that bigger stuff. In the long run, it seems like it takes a long time to split one completely but you get more wood. I recall one time we played with timing some splitting and the big stuff came out way ahead on speed of splitting. But you have to also keep in mind that I don't pick up a log and place it on something to split. I simply set it on end and whack away. One year after an injury I split a lot of big ash. It was a back injury so splitting was out of the question....almost. One day I got the sledge and a couple wedges. I sat down and simply tapped with the sledge. Those things split really easy. It was a bit slow doing it that way but at least I was able to work.
You did good, 343 - good score there. The more I get to do and burn white ash, the more we like it. The only problem is that where we are, there won't be much of it around anymore. So we should definitely enjoy it while we can, eh?
