This is one of the reasons I've considered not keep as much wood if any wood in the house. My main concern with the wood being outside on the deck is the wood getting wet or damp. Inside I know that I always have one rack loaded with dry wood ready to burn. The flip side is that I always have the concern around wood being in and near the wood stove. Jason from RI
I'll show y'all what my setup looks like.....I got a loaded up back porch, and a little wood inside. I don't like fightin' snow and wind when it comes around, so I keep a couple days of good stuff inside and on hand if needed.
Well you guys have inspired me to go above and beyond. This afternoon I started building a 48" wide X 40" deep X 72" tall in the front and 60" tall in the back wood rack for the deck. Simple 2x4" constructions with 1x4" pine with a 3/4" gap between boards for the floor and sides for air. In the front I will come in 1' on both sides to reduce the front opening. If that does not work, I can always put a door on it. My intention is to give this a try on the deck. If it works, then I could add two more to the deck. They should be light enough for me to be able to move these off in the spring. This will allow me to reduce the amount of wood I need inside the house. Sadly my dad thinks I am crazy to bother with this, and thinks I should build the 1 cord sized shed first. Thing is, I've already built the floor in a short time, and will have the rest finished tomorrow. Just in time to shift wood from another rack in the back to the deck. In the afternoon, I'll be splitting the rest of the logs I left from Sunday. This will give us a clear area to start on Saturday. Hoping to finish up this load Saturday. If I finish on Saturday, I'll be able to call for another load on Monday. Start all over. Jason from RI.
Added another trough this year and it lasts over 2 weeks when pretty chilly out but that will be extended the next couple weeks as its supposed to warm right up. These were filled last Sat and will top em off tomorrow. Also have a smaller one that will be brought in by the stove when the temp finally drops outta sight. I guesstimate around 5 cord by the throw- through window?
Cutting and busting wood is fun but it ant all good until you are satisfied with your gold is where you want it good job.
x10 on the wind and snow. Move the wood as close as you can on a day you can enjoy it and in the back of your mind I will be beside the stove on those days. Perfect
Sadly life interrupted my efforts yesterday and today. I didn't get to split any wood nor did I get to finish the new rack. The legs are the new rack for the deck. Now it's a matter of putting the flooring, the siding and the roof. The siding and the flooring should go on quickly. The roof will take longer than it should as I'll futz with it to ensure it's what I want. Jason from RI.
I have a rack behind the back door that holds 4 or 5 days worth. I carry splits in in those square plastic you-broke-the-law-if-you-possess-this milk crates. 1 for pine kindling, 1 for pine splits, 2 for oak.
Thanks GRIZ we like it. Still cutting for 2 of us but now down to about 12 cord a year as my buddy got rid of his wood/oil pig..Er i mean furnace. Usually only 2 years ahead here NY.
Jason, how about going more than 3/4" between the boards? Why not a couple inches? It would give more ventilation and do no harm plus take less materials. You could even go more if needed; heck 4-5" would do no harm on the sides.
