Saw a cast iron griddle for a good price at Kmart the other day. Was going to measure the stove to see if its a better it for the King.
That's crazy. Garage sales are where it's at, but a bit scarce in January. $500, for real?! I was at Cabela's today, and all the enamel coated Lodge stuff is made in China. As is the Cabela's branded stuff.
"Antique" shops sometimes aren't, but think they are. Still wouldn't pay $500 for an antique CI anything. I mentioned earlier that I don't any of mine cost more than about $5. The guy obviously has visions of grandeur. Actually, pulled one out of the cabinet yesterday that needed a re-seasoning. Cleaned it, dried it, then put some Crisco in it and let it run @250° for a couple hours. Gooder as new-ish. I should try to sell it for a few hundy.
The antique shop near my job was asking $350 for a 2 piece cast iron pan set that had a buffed spot on the bottom on each and they where rusty as heck everywhere else. I'm guessing a made in china stamp was once there.I can't even imagine $500
Jeff, The Lodge stuff in Walmart "is" USA... Casted in the bottom of them. They have a steak broiler I really like. The Guy at the antique shop was trying to blow smoke up my A$$ about how much the Griswolds are worth, They are not worth what he was asking, I have four others, all with the Erie Pa stamp, and in fair shape that were my Mothers pans! In his defense, the pan looked like it had hardly if ever been used but still not worth 500 clams. I have two Wagner wares also I don't use much, I should break them out some day. Anyway, for you cast people, check out the Walmart stuff, It's not chinese, at least not here in the Poconos.
The bare cast is made here, just the colored enamel is Chinese. They make a good point of being made in USA on the boxes, but I didn't see it on the enamled boxes. Had to look for it, and found 'Made in China' on the bottom. Still, none of it compares to the good ol' days. I love all my Wagner pieces, much more so than my Griswold stuff (except for the griddle ). And except for that griddle, I don't think I paid more than $5 for anything. And anyone with a few minutes and a sandblaster can make any of it look like new, at least to the average eye.
A while back, I had heard the Griswolds were the go to in CI. I'm not buying ANY pan, of ANY kind, for $500. New. old. antique, junk, so um, no. I paid $300 for a whole set of pots and pans....Calphalon, a few years ago, and now wish I hadn't. Nice pans, but I can't trust ANYONE (except myself) to not use metal utensils in a Teflon/nonstick pan. The crazy thing is, someone will pay that at some point because it's "antique".
Even got rid of all the metal utinsels and had a friend over and he decided to make grilled cheese. Some cheese spilled out and I walk in to find him scraping my new griddle with a butter knife.
Yup, your so right Dave, some nut will spend $500..... What cast I have only I use. My Wife and Daughter use the aluminum teflon pans we have, I think T-Fal, but after a few years down the line there throwing them out and buying new ones. I refuse to cook in them, I just don't like the way things taste, especially eggs, give me my cast any day
Got some bratwurst rings going in a 10" skillet. Going to add a little thisnthat and make it a meal. See what's left in the fridge I can toss in.
CAST IRON SCORE today…. The wife and I are out getting a few things after we came back from the Poconos to re stock the fridge. On the way home I said, lets stop at the little flea market for the fun of it and see whats new, I go back to the pots and pans and see …… No price, offered $20.00 for the whole stack and went home with them all. And it get's better, there was a Fisher baby bear, post 1980 there they wanted $425.00 for, I offered them $200.00, they said they would think about it. I got home, got a phone call, and pick it up in the morning for $200
Oh yeah Dave......u dun gooder. Nice score. Got a cornbread skillet too.....how cool. What plans for the Fisher?
I had a few of those cast iron pans given to me by my parents. I have since given them to my son. My wife likes to put everything into a dishwasher and doesn't want those pans on her glass top range. My son cooks on gas so those are excellent for him. Enjoy the cooking.
Gotta' agree with your wife save. Glasstop stoves and CI are almost mortal enemies. We had a glasstop back in the 90's and it was tough keeping it from getting scratched up. Probably didn't hurt it's usefulness, but looked crappy. CI and a dishwasher.....
To top it off, her glass stove top is white. I hate cleaning it and will use all sorts of countertop appliances to avoid having to clean the darn thing. It has two ovens. We never have used the bottom one. I would like a gas stove, but there is nothing broken on this one, so I am stuck with it.
AAAAAAAAA SCREAMING DEAL AAAAAAAAA Dave that is awesome brother! How's the baby bear look? Good shape?
