Well i went to Lowes and TSC and couldnt find a replacement handle for my maul. So i took the jump and bought a Fiskars Splitting Axe today. It doesnt say x27 anywhere on it. But it has a long handle and fits the description. Is this the same thing as an x27?
I think the all black handles are older? models, called supersplitter before they started making the various "X" models. I think the head is shaped differently on the smaller X models also as they are designed for chopping more than splitting. Here is an old thread http://firewoodhoardersclub.com/forums/threads/fiskars-all-black-s-s-a-vs-x27.6975/
Ive got some unsuspecting elm rounds for the test drive this weekend. They're just sitting there, without a care in the world. All smug and cocky, thinking their invincible. Trash talkin' and givin' me the stink-eye every time I drive by 'em. Well their time is coming. And its coming real quick. Tick-tock, tick-tock.
I just used mine for the first time last night... splits were flying everywhere! It was awesome... time to grab a tire or something to speed things up though
Do you have the newer x27 or the one with the all black handle? Just wondering if i would be better off taking mine back and getting the newer improved model. Havent had a chance to use it much yet.
I've got the one that says x27 on it. I've never used the older model so I don't have a comparison... Someone in here could chime in on that soon enough though...
Really? I've read a lot of good things about the x27, but havent seen much about the older model. For some reason, all of the stores around here have the old model. must not be selling a lot of them, i guess.

So some people think the only difference is the handle. And others believe that the heads are different also. I guess the only way to tell for sure would be to compare them side by side.
I've had the all Black SSA for a few months, it works very well. I also picked up the X11....a 17 inch splitting axe. I used the X11 this winter in the garage. I brought a large round into the garage and if I felt something was too large for the stove, I split it. It worked out pretty good. I also picked up a Fiskars Sharpener....a few swipes in the sharpener and the edge is like new again.
Good to hear from someone who has the all black one. Glad to hear that it works well. Hoping to swing mine tomorrow.
I got an x 11 for Christmas , keep it by the stove , used it a lot this winter re splittin , and making kindling , been using it out at the splitter too for choppin the stringy stuff
Lots of new ones out there with all black handles. The only difference I can see between mine and an X27 is that I don't have the orange colored rubbery grip. Instead my all black one has a rough surface for better grip the last few inches of the handle.
I was on Fiskars website today and noticed something that i thought was strange: they still offer both the all black splitting axe and the x27 with the orange on it. I thought that one was replacing the other, but maybe thats not the case.
someone should send them an email and ask them what the heck is the difference between the two besides the handle
