One year we were fishing the Canadian side of the Straights of Juan De Fuca just beyond the Swiftsure closure for halibut. We ended up catching a bunch of odd, kinda true cod looking fish that we had never caught before. One of the Game Wardens called them Sable Fish and said they were very good to eat. As I recall, they were quite buttery in flavor and a buddy also smoked some as they were a bit oily. They were excellent! I think Sable Fish are also called Black Cod!

I believe you are correct. I've heard both terms. They are tasty too. I've never fished for any of these fish, just had enough, or as much as I can when I in visit the pnw or nor cal. Salmon, and trout were have here in the Midwest/ great lakes.

I have a little longer to wait to get my boat out, as I just checked some webcams from around the cabin. The ice still looks pretty thick and tight to shore with snow piled up on the south side of Flour Lake, while the north side is melted out a few feet due to the sun getting stronger.

Ummm, yeah. I'm surprised it's still that iced over. Is this an unusual year?

No this is pretty typical for the area. We have had a few years of ice on walleye opener. The years it goes out a few days before opener, the walleye are really stacked up in few places we fish. The record late ice out date for the area is May 24th, 2014.

Went out for the Mayday Lingcod opener in the Tacoma WA area. Buddy and I had 2 lings both 31.5 inches by 9:30. Try again tomorrow and maybe have a fish fry on Sunday!

I went and got my boat it from the shed this weekend. All back home and ready for me to prep it for the season. Oil change, gear oil for the out drive, was the hull, and put the shiny prop set on. PXL_20250504_222442325.jpg

Full coolers is what I like to see! Never had a chance to fish for stripers but have always wanted to. Maybe one day go down to Oregon and give it a try. May I ask your favorite way to cook them?

Stripers are a lot of fun, watching a 30+ inch fish inhale your popper is a blast!

With any fresh catch I keep it pretty simple. Leave on the skin. Light olive oil, salt and pepper thrown on the grill. Maybe a squeeze of a lemon.

after it’s been frozen we cook it all kinds of different ways.

Spent the day on the lake today with three other boats full of friends we know. We essentially had the whole bay to ourselves. It was pretty nice temperature wise, both in the water and air. It will only get warmer.

Nice little get ready run to start the year.

If the forecast holds this saturday will be the first one in 13 weeks rain free! It will be nice to not have to wear long johns on the boat. Switching gears from stripers, hoping to stick a giant BFT. There will for sure be pics if it happens.
