Probably because this guy has been baling with wire for longer than I've been alive and doesn't feel like changing. The bales are way tighter than twine and store better/longer too.

I guess it takes a particular baler to use wire? I don't think I knew that was a option...

    Good question...not sure?!
Maybe it's an optional setup with the baler knotter?

Those old wire balers are what generated the sayings similar to "held together with spit and baler wire". I haven't seen one in years around here, and honestly didn't know you could still buy wire for them, but I took a look and Tractor Supply still carries it.

Interesting. I was gonna say I bet that'd hurt to try to pull wires together and tote a bale with one hand (cause string does especially w/o gloves), but it's probably too tight to get them close enough together to even try.

Just something else that would end up in the "lost" category for me. If I really needed some (I can't even imagine that scenario since I have other things that would do the job), I could probably go to the Aubuchon's a mile away and get it. Or, the TSC 3-4 miles away.

There is not once, in my 60+ years that I thought to myself, "gee, I wish I had some twine". I know that is a heinous thought to those that use it on the regular - or have used it in a pinch, but that's the reality of my world.

Now bread bag ties, those suckers are useful to me - and I don't even eat bread

You know... I hate the heat/humidity/mosquitos and look forward to winter temperatures every year. That being said, this week after week stuff where we're around zero for lows and teens to low 20s for highs... Is getting really old. I'm definitely looking forward to the low 30s this week. That's going to feel like t-shirt weather.

Yeah you know it's been balz cold when you can go outside for a bit at 10*, with a long sleeved shirt on, no coat, and think, hey, this isn't so bad...:picard:

Wire tie requires a “twister” rather than a “knotter”. Wire tie was more common say 50-75 years ago. I think wire tie might be available on new balers today by special order but it would be rare. Pretty sure the main reason wire tie came into existence was its ability to completely resist rodent damage. The wire used is a very malleable steel.

11 deg tonight, and then a balmy 40 tomorrow. At least temps are forecasting back more in the 'normal' category for a bit. I think 46 in a day or so. Gonna be sweating. We're gonna go from snow/ice, to fighting fire...
