So I’ve had my eye on this tree for awhile, drive past on the highway several times a day. Finally caught up with the land owner and got the go ahead about a month ago. Pulled in this evening after work to scope it out. Although I knew there was a good chance it could be cottonwood, I had myself convinced it was gonna be an awesome elm score. NOPE, cottonwood. :( What a huge disappointment, it was going to be a fun score. Lots of work but fun! Probably 42” or better DBH. I’m gonna leave it for the doves to roost in.

the 3rd & 5th pictures show the silver building in the background where my “more than one load” score came from. This tree would probably have about the same yield. Picture 4 is from the highway about 1/4 mile or better away

Well, in spite of the wood letdown it's nice country anyway. It's what I picture the pioneers saw as their wagons headed west 150 something years ago. Also reminds me of the prairie in Dances With Wolves.

Cutting, hauling, bucking, splitting and stacking it will produce plenty of BTU's :axe::coldfire:

Makes you wanna cry when that happens! Very scenic pics with the skeleton tree.
Last Fall thought i scored these nice straight ash trunks, i was ecstatic! IMG_1368.JPG
Limbs were not ash so i bucked a round off and took several whacks with the isocore. It was tupelo (aka as black gum) which is an absolute nightmare to split..
Did you ever process that huge pile of cottonwood logs?

Thats about all he has for hardwood out there. Looks at the pics and trees in general are scarce.
I cringe thinking about splitting it too.

Still haven’t got to the cottonwood logs. Gonna try to get some of the rounds home this weekend so I can get them split.
