Curiosity got the best of me, split one up but still not sure. Almost felt kinda soft like birch

Basswood, although ive never seen it with the colored heartwood like that. The bark and split texture match.

I've been cleaning up after the loggers and one of the species they cut was basswood. Next time I get to the woods (I'm hoping tomorrow afternoon or Sunday) I'll try to grab a round and check it out. Right now it's splitting time, need to make more room next to the splitter.

Splits very easily, dries fast, light weight, low btu's. Great SS wood though.

    He'll love splitting it.

It's great kindling being so light and airy. Hard to say where I'll find it out there, know the loggers cut the biggest ones. Maybe the new Isocore will get some more whacking time.

My husband was tight with man that won Champion wood carver for his Loon one year, he was teaching husband. They paid big bucks for blocks of kiln dried basswood.

Haha I was just messing with ya. This seems much different than the basswood I found a few posts up. The basswood endgrain had a rough, fiber-like cut almost like pine while this one cut much smoother like maple. Bark is similar though

I could be wrong as i dont have a lot of experience with basswood, but ive come to notice how the gray bark, when damaged is brown underneath.

I've never seen that bark on a poplar, it really looks like basswood. The center though, nope, it should be pure white if it's fresh. I'll posts the pic of the round of basswood I found and split today. Excuse the bark looking ratty, it went through a processor.

We are probably talking about two different mystery woods. The poplar was the one with the red staining:

Holy crap, never seen oak with growth rings this big before. Some sort of fast growing white oak? I would say swamp white oak but the bark isn’t shaggy
