So I had a pretty big ash log in my garage for 3-4 years. I’ve been waiting for it to dry with a plan to slice off a 5” cookie from which I’d make a coffee table I finally cut it today. Just wondering what I should use to sand it down...there’s a lot of rough surface from the chainsaw. I thought about a sanding disc for my angle grinder. Thoughts? Sorry if this is in the wrong subforum.
There was a thread here a while back and they used a router and some sort of a frame that the router slid across . Let me see if I can find it.
I would start with my planer after sharpening the blades to get the high spots and then switch to belt sander with 50 grit. Keep checking for flat with a straightedge that reaches the full diameter. Mark high spots and keep working them down. After you get it flat with 50, go to finer grit.
Ok Ok that makes a lot of sense. I need to get a planer and a belt sander though...which isn't a bad thing. I can probably get another cookie from the log.
Not sure how to post a link but this is what I was thinking about. Finishing large rounds for outside table tops
