I wore Walmart boots half my life. Until I had back surgery. Then I found out most of my back problems could be attributed to Walmart :)
Or any cheap boot. As I was healing up I couldn’t even walk in my old boots. Bought a new pair of Walmart boots. No better. Learned real fast paying money for boots is worth every penny.
Write Stihl on the side of some quality boots with a sharpie if ya have to LOL

Rope, thanks thats all good info from someone who deals with much colder temps than me. Those Bogs must last pretty decent for you I assume?

So your winter boots you get that much bigger because you like some space in them for the cold weather? Surely those socks (which I will probably be purchasing also) are not that thick? You are just wearing one pair with the boots correct?

I have a pair of Lacrosse Iceman boots I bought in 1990. I have replaced the liner a few times, and can ice fish or be out all day in below zero weather and not get cold feet.

I wear them with 2 pair of wool socks, while still maintaining lots of wiggle room inside the boot since they are oversized. Two pair of socks is a must if walking any distance…keeps socks from bunching up.

So here is what I'm doing with the boot situation.....

In the past I was very happy with the black version of the Bata made Mickey mouse boots in really cold weather, so I ordered a never issued pair of them last night from Coleman's military surplus in Pennsylvania. I'm also going to be replacing my old and well used Rocky Bear Claw 1000 gram thinsulate boots with the improved 1400 gram version for certain activities. My original Rockys are plenty warm enough if you are walking in cold weather but setting long periods not so much. They have been the longest owned pair of any footwear I have and I've had the soles reattached once per boot at a local cobbler because I like them that much. They have to be 18-20 years old now. The warmer version will be a nice upgrade.

My current pair are 5-6 years old and are used daily (4-5 times)for checking the OWB. Plus my work around the house, cut wood-boots. I would guess they have around 1,000 miles on them. They get worn from Aug-Sept to May daily.

Winter boots need to be bigger for 2 reasons: 1@ you need the extra dead air space to keep your foot warm (think double-triple pane windows vs single pane) 2@ you need room for the extra thickness of the socks. If you winter boot with socks are tight the cold will transfer easily right through. Also if it’s a tight fit then you are constricting the blood flow in your feet.

The -50 JB Fields Icelandic socks are 3/8” thick. Add a pair of expedition weight at 1/4” and a thin liner sock.

Yes I will wear up to 4 pairs of socks. It all depends on what boots I am wearing, what activity I’m doing and what temp it is.

I didn’t mention my Castle snow machine boots. They are 3 layer insulation with merino wool. They are fantastic, this is my away from home boot easy to drive in and a fantastic sled boot. Same applies with socks. This boot I have in 13 vs my normal 11. This boot I am more active wearing so I need less sock therefor a smaller size.

For the most part, unless you’re in the Arctic circle, the Mickey Mouse boots are the better option.

specifically because the rubber is also oil and gas resistant.

    for those wondering…
I have older boots that do not have the valve on the upper. That is opened when flying so the boot doesn’t expand at altitude like a ballon.

I’m not in the Arctic Circle but can be the in 175-200 miles by snow machine. By vehicle it’s west to Fairbanks and up Dalton, quick trip for sure. In all seriousness it would really depend on what temp you’re in, and do you have any circulation issues or are your feet always cold. The individual circumstances would dictate whether Mickeys’s or Bunny’s are better. When I worked in Arizona I had coworkers who couldn’t keep their feet warm below +70* —-it was crazy.

What do you think the gloves, hats and neck gators conversation will be like?

Come to Alaska in the summer and every sunny day that’s over 50. If they’re complaining about how hot it is they’re locals. We’re in shorts and a T-shirt and tourist are bundled. It’s a funny sight to see when your looking for it.

Looks like we need a “best oil” conversation.
