So guys/gals... I finally got around to splitting a piece of this wood that I was told was white oak, and then everyone here says it was sweet gum. Well here is the split. Sorry for the quality.. it was getting dark. I don't think it's sweet gum. I think its some kind of Poplar... Split easy with one whack! I hope it all splits this easy.
It's tulip (yellow poplar). Splits really nice doesn't it? That was really a great score with all the nice size rounds you were able to get!
Whew... quite the swing from gum to Yellow Poplar.. I am so glad that its not gum.. I might even split it all by hand!
That's poplar, but in your first pic there appear to be 2 species there. One of which is clearly poplar. The other looks like gum to me still. Did you get all those trunks? Maybe the angle of the pic is just making the bark look different to me. Either way, if it splits, it'll burn
The ones I got was the long thicker looking bark. Yes, I agree its two species there. The smaller bark is still there, I have not been able to get that yet. He agreed to let me stack it to the side of his yard to pick up at a later date. Life has been busy as all get out the last few weeks. So do you think the smaller bark is gum?
You guys with all your fancy tree's and forests for them to live in . Very nice wood score. We have alot of this and some of that.
Yes I think that's gum. I'd grab all the poplar, but gum is usually a huge pain to split. Look for any of those little spikey balls that gum trees drop, that's a dead giveaway Edit: the one in the foreground that you didn't get is what looks like gum to me
bigbarf48 Hey.. I went back for that other wood today that you thought was sweet gum. Got it home and split it. I don't think its gum. Split way too straight and easy. Here is a pic. Also, kind of smelled like musky plum, hard to describe. It was a sweet smell I guess... What do you think?
The coloring looks like gum, but it's hard to tell online. I've had gum that split relatively straight like that. As long as it all splits good like that, I'd grab it. It'll burn
Look what I found! A very old white oak, and HUGE. This has been on the ground for 2-3 years, but still solid! It's really going to put my skills to the test. But with this score, I will get way ahead!
