They make more noise from the intake bellowing than from their exhaust note. I bought an AM muffler for my MS-290 to practice my carving and grinding skills on. $12 and a 2 week wait to get it. It was like a new saw and then I sold it.[/quote]
I do mine just like this... 3/8"-1/2" drill bit down the center like shown but I open the cover a little more. Pretty much the same though. I get 15%-18% better cut times from the testing i've done. Using a tach and setting the H-side on the carb while cutting is crutial to getting the best performance out of these. I have tried advancing the timing too but have seen little gain from that venture on these saws. I do like Adirondack Stihl's design but to make it that pretty would cost me more time and the customer more $$$. If it were my personal saw I would do it his way since it looks nicer.
I think ear plugs ate mandatory with all saws!! I mean the baby homeowner ones stock are not bad but my slightly muffler modded dual port ms650 is just painful almost after a good half hour of long cuts. I mean ear ringing loud like I just shot without ear plugs ringing.
