Young tulip poplar looks quite similar to hickory. The white powdery looking substance in the furrows of tulip gives it away in the larger trees. And they're very straight/tall.

Thanks! I’m trying to dial down my scrounging. I‘m covered for the next 4-5 years, and my storage area is at capacity without jeopardizing my marriage. But I still check the free sites daily out of habit and curiosity.

I concur with the hickory identification.

:BrianK: My old eyes see opposite branching and that says Blue Ash to me. That's pretty much what they look like on my place.

Gotta have a hobby, good of you to be ahead.
I know the property we just nabbed is plenty spacious, problem is I need to get to work on my organizing a bit better. At least the hours of daylight get better from here and I'll get to splitting likely in a couple weeks when we get spring break. Hopefully the weather holds but with our luck....:picard:

Looked at it again Sunday, no leaves yet to help, but it is budding.

There are a few American Elm close by that look similar in branch structure, but the main truck bark looks different.

I am unfortunately leaning toward Red/ Slippery Elm

I don't know, the closest ones are about 60' up... I am wondering if a few shotgun blasts will drop any useful evidence.

The American Elm are on the edge of the field, so I can grab pics of those when I am out there again

Is the bark hard to break off or soft? If it's hard, definitely mockernut hickory

If you’re leaning towards red elm and happen to pepper the canopy with your shotgun, knocking some twigs down, here’s a comparison of the buds/immature leaves coming out on the red elm in my backyard.

My PlantNet app says the bark is Shagbark Hickory. But that tree doesn’t ground here, so I really wouldn’t know.
