For 30 years I used strained used motor oil and never had one minute's trouble from doing that.
I've also used old unused Dexron I as well as used Dexron transmission oil.

For the last twenty years I have used purchased Bar oil and it has all been "recycled oil" with the only advantage is that some of it has tackifier in it. Not all bar oil you buy at the store has tackifier. The only bar oil I ever bought that had noticeable tackifier was the Spectrum brand and it was also recycled oil.

The bar oil I'm using now came from Menard's and it smells like hypoid gear oil with the sulphur in it. There's no noticeable tackifier. While the sulphur (stinky) compounds probably help the chain driver links dragging in the bar rails, there is no indication of any tackifier.

I have not had any tip sprocket or bar rail problems.

And your slinging that used oil all over the ground. May as well just pour your used oil on the ground after you change it!

I use 100% canola or other vegetable oil year round.Perfect for temps under 30 degrees,it can be a tad thin in July/August but not enough to cause me any problems.

Earlier this week I noticed at Mills Fleet Farm their cheapest regular bar oil was $5.50 & $6.50/gallon depending on brand.Even had a summer blend, didnt check the price on that however.

The Crisco canola oil I get at Sam's Club was $7.82 for a 1.25 gallon jug last week.I also noticed they have a 35lb jug (its 4.5 gallons) of their Daily Chef store brand soybean oil for $16.76 or $3.72/gallon.:dex:Gonna try it next.

Keeps the chain, bar & sprockets oiled, the saws clean,is inexpensive & you're not spreading that petroleum based oil around your property or someone else's.Wont harm the birds/animals if they get near it either.

I don't buy the argument that spraying used oil on the ground is terrible and new oil is great. If you don't want oil on the ground I understand, but it should be all or none. New oils have chemicals added. Old oil may have more heavy metals but the difference is probably minor.

You nailed it. Uses oil has heavy meatels from wear in the engine. New oil has much less or none of these.

Sure its still oil but clean oil is better than dirty.

Same argument I have though with fuel. When we burn you sling hundreds of gallons of gas/diesel all over the woods. Not all of it burns.

Or paint when we mark timber. I can use up to two gallons of paint a day. 75% ends up on site I bet a small amount stays on the bark and makes it to the mill. What do you think the EPA would say to me dumping out 2 gallons of paint a day on the group d? Bit if I am Marking timber they dont care, even on federal property. Up till 15 years ago there was lead In The paint too.

I haven't seen any oil sold as bar oil that wasn't recycled in the last 20 years. Even the green stuff is old cooking oil that has been filtered and
neutralized. But you can buy new oil at the store but it is for engines or cooking.

I've always used bar oil - it is the one thing I don't care too much about brand - I use what is cheapest. I've bought two saws in the past to part out, and turned out they were full of used motor oil in the tank - those two saws were filthy with a caked on black film real nasty behind the clutch - nastier than I've seen otherwise. The owner's obviously weren't too concerned with maintenance, but after seeing that stuff I knew I'd never use any. Cheers!
