The WallyWorld SuperTech chain/bar/sprocket oil is what I usually use. If I'm gonna cut in cold weather, I keep the jug inside at least overnight and drive with it on the passenger floorboard with the heater blowing on it too. I usually only have a quart at a time, so when I'm cutting, I keep it side my jacket/coveralls to keep it more thinner.

I ran out of bar oil, miles from the store, what to do???

Took the old bar oil container, put one quart of gear oil, one pint of syn ATF and one container (1 pint???) of STP oil treatment (the really thick sticky stuff). Looks and acts like real bar oil. Next time I'm in TSC/Walmart, I'll pick up another gallon of bar oil. 'Till then, not worried.

'Use it up' means most of it ends up on the ground in the woods. They could just dump it. Would make for cleaner saws.

I cringe every time I cut near any kind of water. The rainbow film reminds me of what my saw is spewing into the woods, and that's using 'clean' oil. Every container of engine oil has a warning label. If you think about it, oil doesn't wear out. It gets changed because of the crap contaminants in it.

My father and a lot of the older loggers used to use bar oil mixed with used hydraulic fluid in the winter. Don't know if any still do.

I always liked Stihl bar oil until the prices went to high. I switched to the cheapest I could find on sale. Never satisified with the tachiness of cheaper oil. A local saw shop just got some of this oil in. Its the best bar oil I have ever used. At $10 a gallon is not bad on the wallet. Price in between Stihl premium and lower grade oil on sale. 20150405_094759.jpg 20150405_094746.jpg

Loogers have been trying a Starfire brand. It says semi syn and is like $8/gallon. It looks tacky too.

The tractor supply stuff I just bought seems thin and not very tacky. I liked the poulan better from walmart than the TSC bar oil.

That was the bar oil of choice around her for a few years by loggers. All the supply places had it. It was probably that price. Now everyone uses that starfire in a black bottle with red top. Its in a bottle like mobile 1 five quart jug looks like. Not a round bottle. They either have beat everyone in price around $8/gallon or is the new thing. All loggers in the area run this kind now. And not all get oil from same supplier either so it must be big in my area.

I am a forester in charge of logging so I see my share of loggers here.

I stock up at tsc when they are on sale. Colder months ill cut it with some 20-30wt clean oil.

Wmo goes in the backhoe after I filter it. Actually ill burn just about any petro based product in my backhoe.

What's bad about that? The important thing about b&c oil is that you maintain flow. If straight VI oil won't flow when the temps get tiny, I have no qualms at all about using pure 5W-30 motor oil (which works fine on 4-stroke cam lobes). In fact, that is what RedMax recommends. As necessary, thinning "normal" b&c oil out with 20-25% kero is recommended by many mfgs. It also works fine, thank you very much.

It's all about what works to keep b&c happy.

I believe the oiler pumps are positive displacement, meaning they pump about the same as long as the oil is thin enough to pour.

I'd never use motor oil because it has very little adhesion and is usually very low viscosity.

I've been using a used oil that I get from work, that we use to test and prep industrial gearboxes for shipment. It has a tackifier in it and runs pretty close to bar oil and doesn't make a mess either. I have my oilers maxed out to be safe. I suspect it's unusual to have access to unlimited amounts of reasonable substitute oil. The only downside is that it won't pour in winter so then I run Echo synthetic bar oil that I get from the local hardware store.

The pro loggers in my country use a used black chitty motor oil , the tragedy is that they have saws over 1000 euros , and they dont care if they spent more money for repairs than a good bar oil cost . aaa i forgot never clean theirs saws

I use used motor oil. My saws are cheap and so am I. It may be a little dirty and not quite as sticky but if it is good enough to run in a ten thousand dollar engine its good enough for my hundred dollar saw.

Why would I want to use waste oil? I bought a gallon bottle of B&C oil at my local Menards this evening for $5.99. I don't want to risk my chain or my bar to save that little bit of money.
