We went to a re-constructed town in the eastern Kootenays of BC and of course one of the buildings that was restored was the blacksmith's shop. Two young fellows were working in there in 85 F temps but they were willing to stop and talk with us. The one young man was saying that there isn't an apprenticeship for blacksmithing anymore. It isn't a recognized trade but instead is thought of as an artisan art and craft.
This was the exhibit forge. The main one for all the big work was up by the train yard. I immediately thought of this thread and those of you who worked the forge.

Here is more information on the town Fort Steele

There is only one place that I kmow of that still has an active apprenticeship for blacksmiths. It is in a historic town in Virginia called Williamsburg. The whole town is old school right out of the late 1700's to the mid 1800's. It's pretty awesome and a site to see.

All of the people there that are dressed in period clothing ad the tasks that they do is there actual job! At least that what I was told when I asked.

The blacksmiths/ gunsmiths make flintlock muzzle loaders complete from start to finish using raw materials! Hand forge and weld a flat piece of steel into a barrel. Then the rifle it using a special jig, all made out of wood except for the steel cutter that is cutting the rifling! They are truly works of art!

Working in that town would be the coolest job of all in my book!:dex::dex::dex:

The town was started originally in 1890s and when the railroad passed it by, it slowly died until a group decided to restore and rebuild it as a historical town. We have a few communities like it in BC - mostly based on the gold rush era of the late 1800s. My favourite business in town was the dressmakers. They provide two full sets of period outfits for each person working there. A big job and fortunately they use modern machines to get the work done. Still would be neat to work there though.

Not blacksmithing, but had a few minutes yesterday to make a new stack for my bulldozer yesterday. All torch welded and used a piece of 3/16 round for filler rod. E966BA4C-4816-4428-B3EB-DA12C0B60A20.jpeg
