Very cool! That’s a set it and forget it size right there! I’d say you might be right too about a peter wright copy cat it looks just like my little brother sized 154 pound Peter Wright.
The old bottle jack trick!

Quick and easy! Holds pretty tight as well! As long as you pay attention to the steel in the fire and don’t burn it in half :headbang:

If anyone needs an anvil dated, send me the serial number if it is stamped on it, usually at the front foot. A pic of the logo stamps help.

Manufacturers changed stamps over the years, and it can help identify the manufacturing range. Even the absence of a pritchel hole can be pre 1840's.

I can't tell you how many hammers and other tools I've collected were covered in rust and a little wire brushing revealed the makers stamp.

Lots of English anvils made it to America, so the Peter Wrights you fellers have are most likely genune.

Nice stump Scott. That will keep it in place.

Had some time this morning and tried my hand at a leaf and fitting up a set of slot jaw tongs.
Had an old piece of 1/2” round bar kicking around I made the leaf out of. B895BF15-C8F0-42F5-95FC-4658D6996B3A.jpeg 3D175CFF-6C9A-429F-B960-40BB6ECD5A8F.jpeg
The tongs were part of a set of 5 I picked up online. They are precut blanks that you form up and punch and rivet together. 60BD5ECD-FB17-479A-8E37-9CF2DDCF15D2.jpeg 5646E728-7A39-4D08-87AF-71250DDC55FE.jpeg

Somebody got bit by the forging bug.

Nice part of blacksmithing is you can make or modify tools to the work you are doing.

I'm due to make something sharp and pointy soon. Been a while since I got the gear out.

I'm waiting on the tree work to let up, so I can get this "new-to-me" antique Canedy-Otto forge up and running.....it's pretty much ready to go, just have to make a smoke hood and exhaust fan for it.

First thing on the slate is a knive/hatchet combo set for a guy over on OPR. Then a handful of my curved draw knives..

I cant wait to see it. I missed out on a few rivet forges in the past few years. I'll jump on the next one if the price isn't stupid.

I took an intro blacksmith class years ago which got me started and I was at a hand crank blower forge. The instructor said they are a little bit of work, but less chance of melting the work in the fire. I really liked using it as you could easily control the intensity of the fire. The folks using the electric blowers kept on melting the ends of the stock. We were working up 1/2" square steel to tapers and the thin ends were dropping off.

This one has a hand-operated blower as well, I'll use it but I also want to hook up the small electric blower I have for when I want to go faster....

Yes, definitely. I'll probably lay firebrick around the outer perimeter, and use clay around the firepot.

Just dig it up or do you have somewhere to get some? I can’t find it around here anywhere! Ended up using some stuff out of a pile of fill from a house foundation.

I like how you keep your wood stove from floating away, using the rocks. I need to find me some like that. Brilliant! I learn so much here.
