Here's it with a pretty hot but ugly fire mainly because the coal is still coking up.

Here's a shot so you can see the whole forge. It's from the late 1800's early 1900's it's made from cast iron and the dimensions are roughly 20" X 32". I have a 14" free standing hand crank blower for it but I have an electric blower on a rheostat to adjust the air flow to the bottom of the fire.

    Looks like fun for sure!!
I watched a guy make a couple bolts over the summer using the holes in the anvil. Pretty cool stuff and he was really laying the hammer to it too!

Nice one boys, looked like you had some fun pounding steel. I remember beeing to some places like that, covered in coal smoke, the sound and the smell.
Childhood memories, i have to buy my old man a few beers i reckon for that one, as he dragged me and my brother and sister to see such places.

We fired up blacksmith's forge last Sunday and I started work on a set of draw knives for a raffle over on the OPE site to help out Adirondackstihl in an upcoming surgery hes going to be dealing with......

Started out with two cutout pieces from an old Jeep leaf spring, and worked one into a curve for a custom knife....the spring steel is a great choice for a knife like this....

    20180211_121634.jpg

Forged tapered tangs on both ends of the knives to accept ferruled handles......
    20180211_200557.jpg

Grabbed some curly maple splits out of my stash in the barn loft for these kind of projects....
    20180212_200301.jpg

Sharpened up the knives, cleaned them good and prepped them for the handles.....
    20180212_200308.jpg

Installed the handles onto the tangs, aided with some two part epoxy for added strength, also used 3/4" copper pipe caps for the ferrules. Here they are pre-stained......

And here they are stained.....the grain on those handles is simply incredible. The copper accents the pieces very well!

I'll give them a good test this Saturday or Sunday when I carve a new handle for my cant hook out of a piece of ironwood!

Those are very nice Scotty. Way to go for helping out with the raffle. The maple handles look great too.

Hardened steel has been a bit of a challenge for me for edged tools. I'll try a leaf spring for my next knife.

Notching some teeth into those tangs with a chisel can give them more bite with the epoxy.

Leaf spring steel seems to hold a nice edge without even doing a final temper.
I was going to do that, maybe the next set....
