Assisting Scotty Overkill in some blacksmithing duties at my shop. We were making a new leg for a toaster from the 1770's.

She'd want the single men version of the calendar!

    Also, nice work!

We had some fun at the forge this evening. Finally made a good, authentic repair on that antique toaster, it was tricky but we got it done!

Also worked on another cool project.....it's a surprise, though......;)

Coughed up about a half pound of coal tar when I took a shower......

Nice work. Always good to see what you guys are up to. That toaster has amazed me with the amount of skill it took to make it with the punched holes and tenon work.

I recently made and donated a reproduction English trade knife that will be used to cut the cake for a 320th birthday party of a local brick garrison house circa 1696-97.

Just mild steel, work hardened and quenched. Curly maple handle and three iron pins.

I have one more project under wraps that will be seen in a few days.

That's the kind of stuff I like to see. Authentic.

Well done, Jon. And yes, Joe and I were fascinated looking at the detail and craftsmanship that went into that toaster we repaired. Making that replacement leg was quite a challenge.

Right, I would spend hours studying that toaster, figuring the steps taken to make it.

I like to study edge tools now and read how the were made. It is all fasciating.

That is awsome looks truly authentic! Did you make one for yourself out of some good hard steel? That would be a nice addition for a traditional flintlock season we have here in PA.

Thanks Joe,I had fun making this one. Down the line I will make another. This was my first one and I really wanted to keep it. Bladesmithing is a bit of work to get into, and I just don't have the time or complete interest to get into it deeply.

I hear you Jon. It can be challenging. Once you get into it it can be hard to stop, the possibilities can be endless in knife making !
I kind of like to get into a little bit of everything although I haven'thad much time for it due to so many tree jobs! I am hoping it will slow down a bit because there is some guys at work that want me to make them a few things.
When I get around to making them me and Scotty will be posting pictures of the projects on this thread.

Here's a question for you blacksmith what about iron plow points? Can you make them or how are they made? I've got 4 1930s vintage two bottom plows that run cast iron points that I have a heck of a time finding and currently have one spare that only fits two of the plows IMG_1679.JPG

I'm sure one could forge points for them, steel would probably be better than iron. Are you sure they're not steel?

Not entirely positive I do know they slide on and there is a small finger that sticks down that a ring goes over and is tightened to the plow "frog" with a threaded rod attached to that ring. A few years ago I hit a rock and broke the little finger off the bottom of it and it looked like a cast iron and I couldnt weld it either have to find my last spare and get some pics. They are John Deere Syracuse stony bottoms guess I'll have to do some more research
