Thank you!!! Great to hear that and your input, I can tell you all about a ship but not so much about a tractor.:doh: There is a good size "tear" in the tread I didn't get a pic of on the same tire, that's why he suggested getting a new tire, but he did say he's been using it like that for 3 years. o_O. I forgot to mention it has about 2600 hours on it.

They say the average lifespan of a maintained diesel motor is about 10,000 hours if that helps

I got a call today from the guy who has the Backhoe I was looking at, he's ready to sell it. I might just buy it, it runs very nice and it beats a "payment". If it get's me through a year I'll be happy, I'll keep you all posted.

We have an older IH backhoe and it's served us well.

I believe it is a 2600 if memory serves. I've used it quite a bit and when we got it it had a bad pump because someone had put the wrong hydraulic filter in it and it did nothing for years. I split it and redid the clutch and put a new pump on. It's a pretty strong unit when it's to spec. Only issue we had was the main boom lift cylinders cap would pop off over the threads. Ended up welding a collar and hold it on with bolts now. Started blowing by coolant so I fear it has a blown gasket or bad block. Dad forgot to winterize it and it may be not worth fixing as the pump is getting weak again.

I got a price tonight for the tractor, $3000.00 and he won't go any lower. He is a friend and he said he was going to advertize it for $4000.00 . He bought the new front tires for it a couple years back and has fixed a few hydraulic lines. I'm gonna kick this around, What do you all think? He said it has about 2500 hours on it that "he" knows of. He is the third owner of it but knew the second owner for years and knew the machine. Now with my $$$$ going in different directions, I'm thinking this will be a worthwhile investment and if I get a couple years from it, it'll pay for itself down the road.

As long as everything seems good with it, can't lose at that price...unless the thing breaks in half and catches on fire as soon as you get it!
I've seen guys asking that much and more for Ford 8N's...and those aren't anywhere near as useful as this machine!

2600 hours is nothing if it was maintained. You can bolt a patch over the inside to keep the tube in and get a new tire in the future.

$3000 is cheap money if most of it works as should. I have almost 6000 hours on my tractor and never think twice about it so I wouldn't be worried about hours. Hydro lines are cheap to replace when needed, some on a hoe suck to change though. As long as transmission tires and engine are good I'd do it for 3000.

Well at least a tractor won't sink and leave you swimming if it goes down.

As I stated in the beginning of this thread, I am not an "authority" by any stretch on these machines, I can run them but didn't know there going prices. I've seen it operate and I'm going over there tomorrow to get a closer look. It is on the rough side "but" he assured me everything works as it should. I'll know more tomorrow. I may buy it with the suggestions here. I know diesels and other machines 40+ years old go for much more than that. I'll post more tomorrow, Thank you everyone.

If you can work on a ship you'll be fine. You have the support of many here for ANYTHING that could need tinkering.

Well, there is three things I do fairly well, Weld, engine work and Hydraulic stuff. So I'm thinking I'll be ok, my thought process here is I know there will be a time to lift or remove something "BIG" like a tire of such, then I'm $#!T out of luck because I have nothing else to do it with. rear tire and rim must weigh 400lbs itself! o_O I have a 6 ton floor jack but let us also not forget I live in NJ, in a development "for now" :headbang:. My neighbors will just LOVE me!  I don't really give a $#!T about them though...

My opinion, take it as you like. Any used thing I buy get it hot, best to road it full speed ahead. Then dump EVERY fluid into a clean container. Cut every filter open and spread the pleats. Look at what settles out. Ferris or not, brass ect. Also check for suction screens in the sumps to clean. Flush cooling system (try and wiggle the fan to) then fill er up. At least you know what it's got in it then.

A tree and come-a-long is your friend. Tires are easy, splitting it is more fun.
