    Update: I use the heat gun to heat up the chimney yesterday and it worked flawlessly.

    I am a little more old school. Rumble up one to two sheets of newspaper and place it in the back near the flue. Place your kindling or fire starter near front or middle of fire box. Reach past and light newspaper then wait just a few seconds before lighting kindling. Watch with door partiality open till flue is hot. Then you can proceed in adding more wood and shutting the door. Once you learn the right amount of paper you will be able to fire up without smoke in the house , I guarantee it
