On the double auger model Englanders (25-PDV and 25-PDVC), the bottom auger runs continously.....the top one is the "timing" auger for the amount of fuel to be fed.

Yep, what imac said. Bottom one runs continuously. I think thats what burns them out. also that bottom auger has an end which terminates right where the fire starts. I think it conducts the heat backwards to the motor that way. I've never had a gearbox fail except that one that had a hole banged in it. Its usually the bearings/bushings that fail.

Is there room in the cabinet to install a heat isolating coupler???

If the heat transfer can be reduced the issue might well be lessened.

Or perhaps a small fan to cool the area the motor is in would help.

Not a bad thought, but these frame style motors just don't really have a way to effectively reject heat.

They are a solid little chunk with minimal area to radiate absorbed heat.

Isolating the convected heat from the auger and a cabinet fan may help.

I removed the back from the ADV 2 T and installed a piece of aluminum expanded sheet.
This allows far more free airflow and keeps the cat out.

The factory louvered panel looked nice, but airflow was really poor.

Also I can see in with a flashlight and can tell when cleaning of the area is needed.

My bet goes on isolating the motor from the auger.

A solid bracket to mount the motor and a little coupler to drive the auger.

    Easy to do and cheap

Theres plenty of room. I run my stove without the back on. No kids or cats :D and the dog knows better. he much prefers to camp out directly in front of it. Its way easier to service with the back open. I took it off after a month. I'm not sure i even know where it is after all these years.

I plan on "retiring" this stove in a few months to the dining room, where it will serve as a backup during cleanings of the new stove or extra horsepower for the seriously cold days.

The Earth Stove that I maintain for a friend used Lovejoys on both augers. That is one old stove, all cast iron, and it keeps on going and going. No one locally can fix it, so I'm the one. The best way to give it its annual cleaning is to pull the entire top of the stove off (only two bolts) and it's easy to clean. It's a positive pressure stove, no less, so the gasket has to seal well!

When we installed the Big Whit we did not have any worries.
Grand kids were very tiny and no critters.

We adopted a lovely Sphynx cat a bit over a year ago and one day I spotted her peering into the stoves innards.

She is very curious and love HIDE E HOLES o_O

With all the fairly open wiring contacts and such in the cabinet a cover was definitely in order.

I would be devastated if our little Fur Child was hurt or killed.

We have never spent $$$$$ on a cat before this little girl.
$350 for our little Chupi seemed quite reasonable for such a loving little creature.

We had two of those beasts in the past
A cast iron one and the BIG BEAST.

If the gaskets are not good the house smells like smoke and they leak ash too

The old Earth Stoves were very tough units.
Sad to see the co go away

Shes adorable. I grew up with a cat, but couldnt stand the "furballs" he would hack up all over the place. The dog is great, very smart. Loves to play, eat and roast himself to hundreds of degrees for hours at a time in front of my stove. Sometimes i look at the stove and say "heh a $1500.00 pug heater"

    Chupi is a hairless breed.
She does have a very fine, short down like cover, but no hair.

    NO FUR BALLS EITHER
Her big deal is wiggling down under the covers and snuggling up close.

The Sphynx really love their "HOOOOMANS"
Will play fetch, follow me around like a dog and get right in the middle of my projects and either play with or pack off my parts or tools.

    Part Cat
    Part Dog
    Part Monkey

She can pick up a pencil/pen with her loooooong toes (Actually wrap the toes around them) check it out, then grab it with her mouse and run off with it.

3 years old and still very kitten like.

Rumor has it that this breed never gets over the playfulness, which makes for great entertainment.

Sadly though the laser pens that most cats love to chase will only get a disgusted look from her as she walks away.

Wakes me in the morning, and if the house is cold and only one stove is running she will get my attention then run to the stove that's off and peer in the window, then look at me and chirp. "Build us a fire"

She will sit right close and watch me get the stove going and not leave until the fire is going good.

I have never seen this sort of devotion from a cat.

She loves bath time and if I don't pay close attention she will be in the tub with me and start having as field day.

Usually though she will curl up on the tub surround and just keep me company.

Right now she is curled up on my computer table by my feet watching the big screen on the wall. I use a 50 inch LCD for my monitor and lean my office chair back and put my feet on the table on a comfy heavily folded blanket. This allows me to be able to avoid neck cramps, eye strain and other misery while doing puter stuff.

Chupi loves to watch cat videos of regular cats doing crazy stuff.

Yessss, our little fur children are special, whether they be Dog or Cat.

When i was growing up my cat did not like me doing my homework. He wanted all of my attention. He would park himself right over my book or binder while i was writing, plop down and refuse to move. A few times he did eat my homework. When i got older and had my first job, he ate my W2. What a hassle that was! crazy kitty.
