Run my ole earthstove at about 700stt and that puts the flue in the. 400 range at 20” up. Couple nights back I stuffed it with mostly smallish splits of locust and it went nuclear. Would guess 1000stt ish. Shut draft all the way and it still took some time to cool down enough where I was comfortable.

I run my stove stt 650 to 700 all the time.
When it hits 725 stt, the alarm goes off, I don't get worried I just adjust as necessary, turn the blower on or turn the air down or both , or I might turn the blower on and the air up.
When firing up a new load I don't pay much attention to the stt, I go by the flames and the inside stove pipe temperature because I know what the pipe temperature is, there is no lag time with my digital thermometer. (same thing with the digital stove top thermometer)
Inside stove pipe temp often hits 800 during startup

Hmm ... my flue is usually 150 or so higher than my stove top. Flue measured with a Condar probe 18" up, stove top with an IR gun.

If my stt is running at 650 my inside stove pipe temperature is running 650 to 700 sometimes 730 to 750 that all changes after couple of hours though.
Generally inside stove pipe stays a little hotter than stove top temperature.
If a person is using a magnet Mount thermometer the pipe temperature will be considerably lower than the stove top temperature

My buddy has an old Earthstove, it has a massive firebox. Stuffing that with small splits of locust is ballsy! They are cool stoves though....I wish he would read forums like this so maybe he would actually believe me about the importance of routine stove care and chimney cleaning but oh well.

Mines a 1003c that used to have a combustor in it. PO melted it and I haven’t replaced it yet. Wanted to this year but ain’t gonna happen. Maybe next year I get one and try it out.

Window is blackened from a reload that didn’t take off as quick as I needed. Assume the massive splits I loaded on hot coals with flames were much wetter than I thought. It’s burning the black off Now though
