With the 15" of snow we just got, and the 3 or so inches before that, any hoarding of wood is going to have to wait for me, so I'll need to live vicariously through you.

Tomorrow's load is for you Hork! :salute:

That much snow would shut me down too. Usually ill cover rounds so i could at least split or stack if it snows.

I unfortunately cut and split every bit of wood at my house.

Maybe I can convince my buddy with the toolcat to go out in the woods. Not at this temperature. It's "warmed up" to zero now. Nope.

Third trip today. Cut and loaded the shag first. Partly split from a barber chair when they felled the spar. IMG_4699.JPG IMG_4700.JPG IMG_4701.JPG Ever present metal! IMG_4702.JPG Solid face cord. 400 was loving it. IMG_4704.JPG IMG_4705.JPG Topped it off with sugar maple. Lots of nuggets which i actually need as i have customers for them now and dont have enough for next year! :picard: IMG_4709.JPG IMG_4710.JPG Homeowner had already bucked the smalls he wanted IMG_4706.JPG Whats left for the maple. Ill take the stump too. IMG_4707.JPG IMG_4708.JPG Scouted farther up the street and another big maple taken down. Dead ash on the far side. Most on a steep bank next to a stream so dunno what i can get. IMG_4711.JPG IMG_4712.JPG IMG_4713.JPG IMG_4714.JPG

Steep bank. Downhill. Close to the road. Laying close to a river. Sounds like my kind of scrounging :D

The only positive is its in a business parking lot. The far side was a big dead ash (thats up your alley) but in someones yard and too difficult for me.

More than likely getting the rest of the maple tomorrow and hit this too. Maybe top it with sassy instead. Dunno if they have the day off as ill scout to see if they are working down farther. They were taking down lots of softwoods including on Friday when i got there.

We don't have sugar maple around here as far as I know. What is it comparable to, as far as firewood goes?

Yup! I'm the connoisseur of "Free" wood and get it delivered to my front door! I've received the "YOU SUCK" award many times! It's a Badge of honor! But when you get trees felled FOR YOU and just sitting there, FREE, yeah, the YOU SUCK award comes into play. Especially with those wonderful species of wood!

Brad, the day you (retire) that Truck, I hope you put that tail gate in the "Pickup Truck hall of fame", or hang it above the garage for the most worked tail gate in History! Ford should give you a new truck just for that advertisement! I had an Old Dodge 150 years back and the tailgate was bad, but NOT like that one!  That's a testament to durability.

I put it in the same category as beech and black birch even though BB is highest. Better than red oak and dries in a year. Have you ever referenced the FHC chart Hinerman? Here's the link
Firewood BTU & Drying Chart I respectfully disagree with some of the numbers.

I hear you on that chart.

All the ones that I see that I believe has sugar maple at 24 mbtu a cord. It's as good as red oak.

Day four, load four. Sectioned up all the sugar maple with the 400 & Isocore including stump. Not quite a full load so i bucked a couple more rounds of sassy. Took the 8" thick stump cut off intact. IMG_4720.JPG IMG_4719.JPG IMG_4722.JPG IMG_4724.JPG IMG_4725.JPG IMG_4726.JPG
Homeowner had already split his rounds. Maybe ill invite him over to give me a hand. :axe: IMG_4721.JPG Nothing left here save for some gnarly sassy. Snow tomorrow but cold rest of week so remote chance ill come back. Dunno what they still have to cut yet farther down. Close to two cords for the score so far.

Well the snow was expected but not the freezing rain today. Yesterdays load still in the truck. Cold temps tomorrow i decided to venture out to storage and rather than just unload i split it all right off the truck! IMG_4728.JPG IMG_4730.JPG IMG_4731.JPG Ill work on stacking tomorrow. Plenty of that to do.
