    FIREwood variety, oak species.
Went back and looked at the pictures of the leaves where the rounds are, looks like pin oak maybe.

Great pics of some great wood! That's a saw-happy crew you're following there. Asplundh went through my neighborhood a few weeks ago, but all they did was trim from a bucket. Have you chatted them up at all? Figured out their route?

Sometimes I wonder why they’re so saw happy. When they first started cutting my road they started at the other end. Worked right past a plethora of dead trees. Got to my property where there’s a long stretch of no houses an they whacked five living oaks right in a row. 40 feet back from the road even. The gypsy moth kills end right at my property line. Made no sense.
This was two years ago now when they first started this big cutting program. Me thinks they had buddies who were looking for lumber grade wood.
I stopped and talked to them. And I don’t really care what they take down. Being at the end of the power grid knocking anything down is good by me. They don’t restore my power for long periods of time in a big storm.
That’s when they told me about the land owners needing to put out a sign if they want the wood and all owners are informed of this.
Um yeah, I’m the owner and never heard a word about any of it. I made a sign that day. Got five cord of red oak out the trunks.

They put (should) be putting cards in the mail for landowners to fill out. Keep the wood or chip it Theres also different crews for different jobs. The trimmers dont take trees down usually, they do and can but not often. I was a high risk takedown truck in a 70’ boom the trim trucks are 55’ so there reach and skills are different. What a rush blowing out huge tops rt off the power lines ( i miss that in a snow storm at night with just a headlamp oh ya that gets the blood pumping, (im fired up on the couch rt now )Theres also crews that clear ground to sky 70’ back from lines everything must go, flat cut rt down to every little sappling, those guys lay the smack down and dont mess around.

No doubt different crews have different equipment and capabilities. The small rural road in my area have seen many different crews. Asplundh came through first clearing for the power company. They’re pretty much equipped to deal with anything with normal electric system wires.
Then the town that borders my property took it on their own to start clearing dangerous trees the electric company considered not their problem. The gypsy moths just seemed to not have a permit to cross town lines :) Even in the forest the demarcation line is right on the border. Neighbors property is devestated. I have no dead trees tat I can say we’re a result of moths. Strange.
The town hired local tree guys to do their work. They did well. Saw nothing to indicate they were in over their head. Took longer than better equipped crews may have but they got it done. Seemed to me the big determining factor was property damage. Over lawns they took them down in little pieces. Forest floor they dropped long pieces.

It must be very aggravating having to continually stop work to let cars by.

I felled a huge white oak a year ago for a friend. 37" stump, biggest tree ive ever cut. His son had left his hard hat from work and i used it when i cut it down. It was dead, in the woods and i was concerned of widowmakers and i wanted to wear it.
I looked like one of the Village People! "Its fun to stay at the YMCA"!

Wasnt intentional that i was behind them . I was almost behind them on Thursday and asked if it was okay to be that close. I had three trucks within a 1/4 mile of home yesterday. I have several locations to go and cut and opted for that one as the wood was nice and straight.
The crew asked me to help them do a side job on Sunday. They need a chip truck to grind into and dump chips on guys property. Id have to make a plywood box around the racks. Im undecided. Depends on what it pays.

Latest cutting from Sunday. This clump of red oaks right down the street from me. They were cutting these over 2-3 days last week and finished late Thursday. I Stopped Friday and asked lady about wood. She checked with husband, calls me Saturday morning and gives me the go ahead to cut and take. Hour and a half cut and load this afternoon. Sold the load to a customer. He will takes the rest of the wood too. IMG_1110.JPG IMG_1112.JPG IMG_1111.JPG

If a pickup load is half a cord, that's about right. Bonus for your customers is, the wood is dry.

I call it an oversized load and it is more than a third But less than half a cord. The problem people are having is cordwood guys wont do 1/2 cords and if they do they want over $200. People i talk to can barely find a cord under $300. One cordwood guy ( local) is selling green for $325

Sounds like you are doing good. We have been getting $75-85 a load in our market area for 1/3 cord loads, 18" long wood, so it's an over size load too...oak and hickory. IMG_20191008_120518390.jpg

i got $90 for it. Two hours of work. He wants the rest. I only sell face and half cords. Once in a blue moon a less. I have a hard time getting $140 delivered for a half down here.
