Wiki calls them a "coal scuttle " with hod as an alternate. I've never heard coal scuttle until I seen it there. I learn new stuff every day too. :)

Not to Hijack, About 7 weeks ago I was walking down the Frozen driveway going to dump the Metal Ash bucket, Feet kicked out in a slick spot and I landed Ribs first on the edge of the bucket. The other night was the first time since that I could sleep on my side and not flat on my back... Rib injuries Su(k :)

I bruised my ribs last winter. Put too much pressure on the baby gate from my knees while loading wood and it caved in. I could not take a full breath for like a month. Rib injuries suck!

I have a bucket like this. So does my dad. My grandfather had one too. Until just now I had no idea they were used for anything but ashes. :)

I always use a double-bottom ash can for ash removal and cooling storage before dumping outside.
They can bought at most retailers selling wood stove accessories.
I pile cold ash at the back of my property to be used in gardens in Spring soil preparations.
(check out the link below for example of ash cans and devices)
