I never tracked gas fuel and oil used. I will reiterate your wood burning savings though. Before we had a boiler we used oil and burned wood in a stove in the basement. We would go through 1000 gallons of oil and burn @4 cord of wood. We put in an outdoor boiler and wood use went way up but oil stopped. We since have gone to an indoor gasser. We now burn 7-8 cord plus 100-200 gallons of oil per year as temperatures are too warm for the boiler to run. We have the land and real equipment to harvest the wood 100 miles away, I do not have a Tri axle self loader so normally someone will haul it when they are coming this way empty and I throw them some money. I can buy an 8 cord load tree length for $1000 locally. I have to figure my time and travel to our lot into the price, arranging for my skidder to be there as I keep it rented out and keep it working, and the weather to do all this. I can cut myself 8 cord in a weekend easily but making it fit the schedule is the problem. Realistically it is just as cheap to stay home and buy a load and not depend on all the other variables to fall in line. So for $1000 plus a little oil I don’t see much changing here in any time soon and if the price of wood goes up drastically I’ll just cut my own.
I’m with you brad If they do go up, I just don’t see it being that much. Do you typically have firewood left for sale this time of year or is this a unique year?
I bought 2 cases of bar oil at blains farm and fleet this past fall. I’ll have to look at what I paid but I figured it was a good price. I bought it more cause they had it and I didn’t know what to expect as the season progressed. Glad I did though! Maybe I’ll see if they have some more. I still have 3+ gallons left
Was that question for me Haftacut ? If so yes i have two year oak left. Have half cord going tomorrow for a regular and another this week sometime. Access to stacks due to mud and/or snow hampers my efforts.
Nice you still have some to sell Is the ground freezing up any overnight? When the temps are milder, My father in law will cut all day and load his truck to the hilt and leave it back in the woods Till the next morning when he’ll drive it out on the firmer ground. Hope your able to get back to churning it out soon
Ground did freeze up and snow covering path to where ill have to load up tomorrow. Rain Monday and warming temps so i doubt ill be getting more from there. If snow cover subsides i have some here that can go too. Luckily no mud in that spot. Ive had calls from my CL ad but have been past my delivery radius. Id like to get that pin oak cut and moved in back but may not happen soon.
