Are the newer style gasification boilers less troublesome?

Sure does. Question is, what's better? Gasifier with no storage or smoke dragon with? Wait wait wait..... I know... It depends! :hair::p

I'd probably put my money on a gasser

I'm sure if you compared a gasser that was being operated/maintained poorly, and poorly setup, to a smoke dragon OWB that is optimized as best possible, you might flip things around, or at least close...

Hi guys. So I had something new happen this afternoon on our 2 month old Heatmaster G10,000
I noticed in the afternoon that our gas had come on to maintain the water temperature in the house & I just figured what with it being so cold the wood in the Heatmaster must have burned up so at chore time I figured I’d fill the stove up for the overnight burn . Walking up to the stove I noticed that I didn’t hear the fan running. It always runs when the water temperature falls below 140 degrees. I looked at the display on the side & sure enough the water temperature was 133 so I checked the firebox & it had half a load of black charred wood inside. I went back to the display/control panel & hit the cold start button nothing happened no fan motor kicked on so I shut the power off & waited a minute & turned it back on when I looked at the panel I noticed that the fan circuit breaker had tripped so I reset it again nothing except thus time I heard a low pitched hum coming from the back so I opened the back door & the fan was humming but not turning so I stuck my knife in the back of the motor and gave the motor fins a turn & it took off. I went & did evening chores & when I came back it was working fine so I put some wood in for overnight. Before I headed home I shut the power switch off & waited a minute & turned it back on, the fan immediately started running again. I’m not sure what the issue was. The handle for the turbulators moves as freely as the day we installed it & the wood I’m burning is constantly between 15-20% moisture content. What am I missing? Thanks guys!

Did it seem like it was frozen at all? I know it seems unlikely (impossible?) but with these cold temps weird things can happen.
morningwood , do I recall that there were issues with some of the fans on these? I know my folks had one go bad on their G10000 just a few months in...HM replaced it (fortunately the dealer had one) but they decided to have a spare on hand then too...insurance...if you have it you'll probably never need it.

It didn’t seem frozen just seemed to need a little help to get turning. Sounds like having a spare may be a good idea. Thanks!

I had this happen to me one time. Some creosote condensed in the chimney and dripped down to the fan impeller and stuck it to the side of the boiler.

I thought it was my capacitor but once I took it apart I figured out the real issue.

I know they had a problems with fans getting cooked on the original G series because people were leaving the bypass open too long and cooking the bearings.

Haven’t heard of any fan issues on the new G series. I need to get a spare fan motor myself for my boiler and furnace. Cleaned mine a month or so ago. Searched for one on the internet and they seem to be readily available. Pic attached in case you need the info.

Couple people on Facebook have had a very similar scenario and it’s the same scenario as lukem mentioned.

Know you said your turbulators move without any problems. What’s the color of you lower refractory area ? And do you have any creosote down there.

The bottom of your stove is exactly what I’m seeing with mine also. I have a touch of creosote on the hinge side of the firebox by the door. Been there since day two.

The experts say, you should only burn stuff that you are able to pick it up with one hand. I’ve burned some pretty big pieces in mine but I’ve always mixed them in with split pieces, they’ve burned fine. That’s what I do with wood that I suspect is a little wet too. Most of my wood tests around 20% moisture on a fresh split face.

Do you have a good deep coal bed ?
