Are the newer style gasification boilers less troublesome?

Mine couldn't be simpler or easier to operate. I have a little write up further up in this thread.

I agree. They aren't any harder...they are just a little different. For some people different = pain.

My BIL just installed a new conventional CB this year. He burns 18-20 cord of wood a year between his house and shop....that could have easily been 9-10 if he was willing to adjust his habits just a little bit.

I agree on the reduced wood amount and all that and I more than likely will buy the gasification boiler if an when I buy one

The guys on Facebook who burn conventionals are always bragging about their lack of maintenance etc. I guess the 5 minutes a day of maintenance for a gasser is a big deal.

In the next paragraph they’re bitching about how much wood they have to cut all of the time. No way would I want to cut that wood every year. That would get old really fast.

As far as slab wood, I burn lumber cutoffs i get from a local truss company in my heatmaster during shoulder season with no issues.

Would imagine slabs would be similar

This is exactly what prompted me to look into a gasification boiler. There was nothing wrong with our conventional boiler but after so many years of trying to get a season or two ahead & aging cutting firewood was going from something I used to look forward to doing on the weekend to a job /burden that I had to do to keep up with the consumption of our old boiler. I am hoping this new boiler is going to allow me to get ahead & be in a more comfortable position.

I went from a pre-EPA stove inside my house not making hot water to a gasser boiler and I burn half the wood.

What happens when the power goes out? Will the boiler put itsself out?

The damper is normally closed...has to be energized to open.

Have been throwing around the idea of a wood boiler for a while. There is water baseboard already existing in my house. The dependency on electricity and upfront cost is what’s holding me back. I guess stuff probly isn’t going to decrease in cost…

Same exact situation here. I hated spending the money but would 12/10 do it again. I bought a little HF Chonda generator to keep the heat on if the power goes out.

I could always keep the pre epa in the basement for the times the power go out. I guess I’m just being cheap and unsure of the unknown. Thanks for your input. It seems most are happy in the long run.

If you are on the fence I’d definitely look into getting one before the rebates expire. Believe they are capped at 2k going forward.

No regrets on getting mine. So nice to have the smoke, fire, and mess outside. The best part is, if I’m cold I just turn the thermostat up a little.

Lehman you should be able to get close sizing a boiler with a little math and your existing annual fuel usage. There are charts that convert everything (oil, LP, electric) to BTU's. I think you mentioned multiple buildings and this might make things a little "fuzzy" but a simple X sq/ft = Y BTU's is really a wild azz guess.
I'd put a 12x12 addition on either the shop or my house for a OWB before I put it in the yard. The amount of latent heat that's thrown off (into the yard) is probably enough the heat a shop!

Then your dealing with wood inside for insurance purposes and it’s a pain

I've only ever had 2 HO insurance companies, but neither one gave a rip about the wood heat...just wanted pics of my equipment and they charge an extra $50ish/yr for it...but I would have to pay that anyways as we have a built in fireplace, so gotta pay even if not using it.

I meant but didn't say it :D. An additional separate (attached) room with an insulated exterior door into the house and another one to the outside.
This is what I did for our indoor gasser. Now this was in mind with the original build and not every house is laid out where this would work but we dry our laundry in this room on an old fashioned wooden drying rack. The room is usually 90 -100*. It was 12* outside this AM and 80* in the house with the door open and 1 window cracked an inch. It's got a concrete floor with a drain and is more a boiler room that can hold a couple of 3 wheel barrow loads of wood. Just outside the exterior door is a covered area where I can put 2 of my 90 c/f woodracks. A shop would be ideal for this otherwise wasted heat.
