If you can, buy yourself a test kit from the pool store.

Are you talking African cichlids? If so, iirc, they can handle hard water.

P7090132.JPG Here's my 193 gallon DIY plywood and epoxy hybrid reef tank in all of its former glory. I've got a lot of pics of my tanks, I just need to transfer them.

very nice. salt water?? I am considering shipping live tropical fish back once I am settled in St Croix. Seems to be a big market.
Live on an island, sunny 82 degrees, scuba dive and sell fish, sounds good to me.

Yeah, full blown saltwater reef tank, real live corals. Lots of work, which is why it doesn't look like that now. It's a basement tank, and I don't hang out downstairs.

As far as selling/ shipping aquatic life to the mainland, you can do it, there is a market, but make sure you do your homework. A lot of stuff is protected.

If you do it, let me know. I'll be your guinea pig.

I worked at an aquarium store in the late 1980's, the owner regularly took vacations, scuba diving, and would bring back fish with him. Even back then I remember some of the selling for hundreds of dollars or more.

I am going down in April, maybe I will take you up on that. I looked into how to ship and it seems straight forward. You being in Wis. would probably be a worst case scenario time wise.
If it works you get a free fish, if not appetizer's.

that was my thought, I am diving anyway, catch a few fish at no cost, sell on ebay for 100% profit. well minus fees. The ones I have seen selling for a lot, I have seen regularly diving.

What have you seen fish wise? Keep in mind some inverts go for good bucks too. Urchins, snails, cucumbers, blue leg hermit crabs etc. You can make $ if you don't catch the fish that day.

I could use a renew on my clean up crew, blue leg hermits, and various small snails and a couple urchins.

Take pics. I can assist with Latin and common names, and if they are used in the aquarium hobby. Some are so destructive that even if they are pretty, they don't have any, or much value in the hobby.
