Very nice! We use old refrigerators (chest freezers are better) and paint them green so they don't look too redneck. Pretty cheap alternative; our dump guy saves them for me.
We just changed the layout this year. We used to have Rabbit fencing on metal stakes (you can see it rolled up) and no stones in the garden area. We had a low 12'x4' raised bed as well but grass clippings and weeds would get in there so we made it bigger (24' x 36') added weed guard and stone, put in cedar posts and 2' high galvanized panels. The rabbit fencing will go above that. I will most likely add the low bed in there again as well and I have plenty of room for more frezzers/fridges!
WOW! That looks incredible!! Hopefully someday I'll have mine set up in an area where I can make it look as nice.
Thanks. It's a continual work in progress I'm afraid and the month long rain has not allowed me to finish as I have begun work on the Ark... Yes I do. The transfer station where I get them sends out a technician to recapture the refrigerant. Once he does, the guy working there puts aside the one(s) I'd be interested in and I pick them up at a normal Saturday dump run. I bring them home, strip them of everything, drill some 1/2" holes in the back (bottom) of the fridge and paint them. I take everything I strip out on my next trip to the dump and toss it in the scrap metal bin. No problem. I like to "up-cycle" when I can and these work great. My BIL came up with the idea. He has about 12 of them now at his house. My suggestion is to try to find large chest freezers as they are already designed to lay this way and they are taller so it's easier on your back.
An awesome repurpose of something that would likely end up in a landfill. Not sure where they would end up nowadays. But still awesome, and you've laid it out very nicely.
I have stacks of semi tires with the sidewall removed for our raised beds. They warm up early in the spring so we have fresh veggies about a month earlier than everyone else.
It only took 12 years to finally get a garden going here and so far I am pleased with the results. The last time I really did any vegetable gardening was back in the 70's as a youngster, so I wasn't sure how this project was going to come out. So far I have only been able to harvest lettuce, however it has been great to just go out and pick what I need for a sandwich or salad. The rest of the plants are looking good, my zucchini and summer squashes are starting to produce, and I found my first cucumber. No tomatoes yet however some of the cherry tomato plants are over my head now (one of downsides of a raised garden bed). Knock on wood, I haven't had any critter issues yet (I have found fresh deer and moose droppings just inside the tree line).
Very pretty stock tank planters! I saw a pic of something similar, but using old filing cabinets. They spayed them with some kind of acid to create a patina, but that's not necessary if you're redneck enough. Wish I had saved the picture.
That is definitely an interesting concept and much cheaper than the route I went. However, I don't think those would last very long with our winters.
