So I traded in my Ram 2500 and downsized to a Ram 1500 (the reasons are irrelevant however when I saw the Tank-colored limited Built to Serve Marine Corps edition I was like ooh, shiny object....). The truck has the 5.7 Hemi, 4x4, and locking rear diff so hauling/towing isn't a problem (it is supposedly rated to tow 12,750 pounds) however I am considering getting a small dump trailer to save wear and tear on the truck. I'm looking at a something along the lines of the Griffin 5x8 dump trailer with a dry weight of 1,895 pounds and a carrying capacity of 3,305 pounds (they list gross weight as 5,200 pounds). Does anyone have or has anyone used one of the smaller single-axle dump trailers and if so, what was your impression? My main scrounging area is a narrow forest service road with limited turn around areas so I'm not looking for a full-size double-axle dump trailer. Thx.
I've used a very similar trailer more than once & found it excellent for tight spots & narrow roads. I've actually considered buying one to augment my bigger trailer. They tow & maneuver very well. For what you describe I think it's a great fit. Love the truck btw!
The trailer I'm looking at has a 12-volt electronic-controlled single hydraulic ram for dumping the bed. A scissor lift is more ideal however with the smaller size of the trailer, I think the single ram format would be ok.
You just had to suggest that Now I'm picturing painting the dump trailer to match the truck, putting military tactical markings on it, etc. Thanks....
Had one something like this and used it for roofing for years. You could put plenty on it with the sides I built.. Liked it allot.[/QUOTE]
I’m not crazy about dodges, but man that is nice. Looks awesome, good specs, I’d rock it. I have to say great idea on the trailer. So nice to not beat up a newer rig with firewood. I use my truck, and haul wood in the bed sometimes, but use my trailer all the time. Put my tools in the bed, and when I’m done just unhook trailer and leave it or in your case just dump it. Btw I would love to see the trailer primed and sprayed od green! Would match the truck. Tell the wife the original paint is no good and this is absolutely needed to avoid rust. I vote yes! Good choice on the truck too. Some days I wish I had done a new model half-ton. Especially with diesel at $4 a gallon.
My 6X12' tandem is rated at 10K with a single ram & I've not had any issues with it not dumping a load. I try not to overload it, but it gets used for sure.
Same trailer for me. I love it. It dumps what gets put in it. And will carry a tractor. I think a 6x10 dual axle 8-10k would be a good size to have if not afflicted with dragging stray tractors home. I had a single axle 5x8 dump before I bought this one and it was real easy to overload that one 3500 lb axle. It seems like I only had room for about 1 ton payload. You lose some for the weight of the hydraulics, battery, etc. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
