Anyone here interested in a race chain “build-off”?

You all have me wanting to get into the square filing. I bought a square filed chain and haven't yet put it on a saw. I still haven't gotten a vise set up in the basement for filing and I don't want to use it till I have a set up to sharpen it with... Maybe I have this backwards though. Maybe I should use it and when it gets dull I'll be well motivated to get on the square filing setup and get it moving...

I know all about hitting junk in trees. Pretty sure one of the framers popped this nail in a tree by our driveway when the house was being built. Ring count and depth kinda confirm that. I know I didn't put that nail there and this was deep woods before I cleared it to build. Hit it on the first cut putting the notch into the tree to drop it since it was dying. Just my luck...

This was a Stihl 3/8 full chisel chain on a 25" bar and took about 16 strokes with the file per tooth to bring it back to usable.

Dang. What are the odds! I’ve heard of people sawing right through nails, but not length wise. While milling I’ve had the pleasure of hitting hardened screws several times. It jacked up the teef bad. Milled through a whole mess of .22 billers in a pine log once and it didn’t do much at all.

Lead isn't so bad, I've hit bullets a few times with no major damage, but nails, screws, eyebolts etc. just destroy a chain. Always seems like it's the newest chain too.
