My wife and I are considering having some mini splits installed in our house. I was wondering if anyone had any input into brands that are better than others etc. Thinking about one unit to serve our dining room, living on kitchen area and one to serve the three bedrooms in our house. I think if I read correctly, one unit can serve three different heads for the three different bedrooms.Total square footage is approximately 1400. Bedrooms are smaller 10x12, 12x14,& 12x16 Thanks.
According to my guy; Mitsubishi are the best, the caveat being when I last looked price was double of off brand that had better warranty. when looking I was also suggested before multiple heads to consider doing 1 head per unit as the efficiency dropped considerably (10% +) when using multi head Units. In my area cold options are preferable and bogieb and VTAbstoluteSteel were closest to my climate and both had opinions. There is a thread here somewhere. I believe many of the rebates have expired BUT here you couldn’t find contractors who were needed for rebates for 15 months before expiration
We put in a Mitsubishi system a few years ago, with the intention of being mainly for cooling and humidity control during the worst summer days, but it's also handy for heating on those evenings when you just need to knock the chill off but don't want to build a fire. It's very efficient at cooling, costs a little more energy when heating, and really starts to work to hold room temperature if the outside drops below 35F or so. But by then, I've usually built a fire. We live in an old farmhouse that we insulated the best we could when we moved in in '85, but the insulation is only fair or maybe even poor by today's standards, so that plays into the heating efficiency, too. My single unit runs 5 heads, two downstairs in the kitchen and living room/den, and three upstairs in each bedroom. It's nice to be able to control room temperatures independently, but I've found that especially when heating, all the units have a small amount of pass-through even when they're not actually turned on. Not a lot, but they get warm enough to tell they're above room temperature. Overall, we're very happy with this system.
I have a Mitsubishi system, 4 heads. Love it. Heat with it down to 40.when I start the stove. AC (yesterday and today...) too. Very quiet,.much more efficient than window units or ducted units..and than resistive heat.
I have a Fujitsu, 2 head Halcyon minisplit that is rated to 5*F (they make them to go lower now). The main head is in the living room and is 15k, then I have a secondary head in my office at 12k. The outside condenser is 24k. Condensers are specific for how many heads they can support. My specific unit can support 2 heads so if I wanted to add a 3rd one, I'd either have to get another outside unit or replace the unit I have with one that can support 3. If thinking you could do the heads peicemeal (say, put in 2 now, then next year put in another), you can get an outside unit that supports 3, then only use 2 connections until ready for the 3rd. Here is the thread that someone earlier commented about. My particular conditions are spelled out in posts 10 & 11. Then there is more in #17. Then gbreda started on #34. Lots of good info in there if you just go past some of the merged threads and banter.
We have a Panasonic at the weekend place. We went with that vs the Mitsubishi for the wifi control. That’s been a huge upgrade for us. We’ve had it for just under a year and it’s been great for cooling and heating. I’m not an HVAC guy by any stretch. That being said, I’d go with a good unit vs a Mr Cool or Amazon unit.
Thanks for all your comments. I’ve heard a lot of good things about Mitsubishi. I have a local guy who wants to do carrier. I haven’t heard as much good about them so I’m a little skeptical. We shall see. Thank you all again!
One thing I forgot to mention in my original post -Mitsubishi now makes a version ( I think it is called "Hyper Heat" or some such thing) that heats much better down into colder temperatures than mine does. I missed that version by about a year or so.
Thanks! Yes, that’s what we were looking into. Another fellow I was talking to told me that Bosch makes a good unit. But I haven’t heard much else about them or read much about them.
