Looks like it might've had a controller in this pic.

Silverado had more options. The Cheyenne was just above the w/t work truck stripped models.

If it has PW and pl, and ac that may be about it. Maybe cruise control.

Concretegazer it does have a boss plow hook up which is nice, if I get the truck I may get a boss plow for her eventually....

Yes guy you are right she does have A/c because remember the guy selling it told me he couldn't believe it worked so well lol.... But it does have the manual locks and Windows, which I personally prefer anyway....well I am trying to get my mom to watch my little 11 month old angel tomorro for a bit so I can go test drive this truck, I just hope it all works out so I can finally have a wood truck I can depend on, and not always be worried about getting stranded deep In The timber....I am no rich man by anymeans, but I am past the stage of havin junk equipment.....all my other tools, chainsaws, and other equipment are in great shape, so now I need a DEPENDABLE wood truck....

Unfortunately the factory "tow package" on trucks of this vintage meant that it might have an auxiliary transmission fluid cooler. It was still up to you to add the hitch and any electrical.

Good news tho, as CG pointed out, the interior pic kinda looks like you might be all set already. Look for a small black box hanging under the dash.

We used to run round bales out of the fields 16 at a time on 2 wagons. Probably 20k including the wagons. No problem on dry ground.

Mastermech, yes I do see the box now that's nice she is prolly already set up!!!!!

Lukem, wow you can't ask for much more from a truck can ya...... That's pretty damm impressive..... I know when I did construction work, I had a boss who had the long extended cab 2wd, with th 454..... That damm thing would flat out smoke the tires on dry pavement like most trucks would on wet pavement!!!!!!..... He also abused that truck and pulled all kinds of equipment with it.....

I am glad even some of you non-chevy guys say the 454 is a good motor, says a lot..... I think it be the perfect wood truck for me....Looks like I may be goin to drive the truck in a few hours can't wait to see what she is like!!

Well guys I went and looked at and drove the truck..... She looks decent has few small dents, body and frame isn't rusted that bad at all,.. There is 1 or 2 of the cross members under the bed that have some bad rest spots, but the body and frame look good.... Truck drove good too, tracked straight, tranny felt really good, and the 4wd locks in good too....

One problem that I don't know if it's good or bad...now I know you can hear the fuel pump on the Chevys, they kind of have a "whiny" sound......but it seems like the pump on this truck is loud for sure...... Do these 454s just have a louder pump or do you guys think it may be goin out....

Also I looked up what this truck in "good" shape should sell for according to kelly blue book, and it's basically a $3000-$3200 dollar truck, and I would say that is about right.... The guy has $3995 on it and I told them I can't do that.... I told them there is no way I will go over $3500, so we will see what happens.....

If any of you guys that have the 98 454 or a year close to it, can tell me if your fuel pump is louder than the pumps on the 1500s would be much appreciated..... Thanks kyle

Dad had an '86 dually 454 gasser, 3 speed w/granny low on the floor. Even without 4x4, it was geared to tow/haul, and would pull many houses off their foundations!!!!

10mpg empty...................8mpg towing a 2 horse trailer w/horses and with the slide in camper in the bed.

Buy it and call it good.

It looks like a clean 1T SRW.
Having been a plow truck the tranny has seen some abuse, along with a trailer brake setup.
I'd be cautious of the ~80k miles, that's pre digital dash, and they can be rolled back kind of "easily" . Then again being a gasser it just plowed towed its entire life.

Main places to look for rust are cab corners, rear shock mounts, and brake lines.

A noisy fuel pump is usually a sign that it has seen better days, but, I have seen people run 'em like that for a long time.

My brother had a '92 Ford F-250 with the 460V8 that had a noisy pump in the back tank (2 tanks) but it was real noisy, people standing nearby would look up trying to find the low flying air plane when he was running on the back tank (seriously) He decided to run it until it died since a flip of the fuel tank selector switch would keep things rolling on the front tank/pump.
We went on an ATV trip in WV and on the way home the truck started to lose power on hills (only when running on the back tank) so it was pretty obvious the pump had run its last rodeo. We had just filled up so the plan was to run the back tank on flat areas and down hills to burn off that full tank of fuel so to make dropping the tank easier when we got to replacing the pump.
A day or two later the truck started to miss (all the time) turns out that running that fuel out of the tank was a bad idea, real bad. The low fuel pressure made the engine run lean enough to burn #8 cylinder up! :headbang: :tears:

Basod, how easy is it to roll back the millage..... And what do you mean by then agian being a gasser it just plowed its whole life...I did check brake lines, if they haven't been replaced in past few years I would be surprised.... But I am like you, I am always overly cautious buying vehicles.....the tranny seemed to shift very smoothly....

Is this a private owner or a dealer? If it is a dealer they should be able to give you a CarFax report to verify the mileage. If it is a private sale you can still run a VIN history, I've used vincheckpro, you get 5 vehicle reports for $12.95, doesn't have as many frills as CF, but way cheaper and still has all the relevant stuff that you need to know.
Did you pull the dipstick to check the tranny fluid? It should be red not brown, fairly "clear" not cloudy (dirty), and smell like ATF, not "burnt" smelling

Actually I did look at tranny fluid, and it wasn't red or brown but a kinda very light tan clear if that makes since.. The truck shifts threw the gears better than my 91 4.3 v6 with 80,000 miles......

It is a small lot dealer who has the truck, he told me the school that owned the truck, and I am goin to call them tomorrow and ask about the truck....the title should tell all the owner history on the truck shouldn't it????

Just the previous owner, which at this point will be the dealer. If it was school owned it very well may be 1 owner, and those miles could easily be correct. Probably well maintained too.
My previous service truck at work (city) was traded in at 12YO with less than 30k on it...tons of idle time on the engine though...probably wouldn't have that on a school truck...but lots of short trips, starts and stops, make ya wonder what the heck they wanted a big block for?

Well yes it does, but if they had a plow in it, and pulled there zero turn mowers around with it I can understand that...I work at a university, we have a lot of v8 fords and a few 350-3500 series trucks for the bigger jobs....

Is there any way I can see who owner the truck before the dealer, other than calling the school it supposedly came from???

I wouldn't worry too much about it. It's not a real high dollar repair and every Chevy from that era has noticeable pump whine.
