Someone reached out to me for help, they are wondering if a part is missing from their burn box.

I'm thinking that there should be some more to the burn chamber? Like maybe a firebrick panel?

I believe it is an advantage II.

The attached pics show the owners manual and the burn chamber (?) which to me, looks like it needs more to it? Seems like it would be easy for flames to spill over and the base of the chamber?

The person bought a house this summer with this stove in it and called me this evening and said "we're cold; can we light this? It looks like something is missing"

I don't know anything about pellet stoves, but it would appear that the "firebrick" boards or panels are missing. Also, I told the person to NOT light or attempt to light as it looks like maybe more than just the panels are missing?

    What think youse?

Interesting photo of the front of the manual,I may request you copy it and post or send it to me.As far as I know,no Whits used actual firebrick, just cerra board panels.I assume you know what cerra board is?Anyway,I will leave some links. Looks like from the picture, rust,so possibly no "fire protection panels"(that is what they are properly called),and you should not run the stove without them. They keep the hopper from overheating, and the back stove panels from cracking, breaking welds, etc, but has been known it can be done for short times. Also, new "cerra" panels can be gotten, but, most people purchase steel replacement panels, and that might be already what is installed there.I hope this helps. Hi

Looking at the piccy you posted, and things don't look bad....but the angle of the picture does not show the fire pot well enough.
The picture looks like the older style fire pot.....The were two styles.

Normally you should see 3 pieces of "Fire Brick" material in the rear of the fire box.

There are two pieces of sheet metal...one on each side of the fore box that retain the two side pieces of fire brick material.
My posted piccy with the new fire brick shows the retainer plates well and the screws on each side.

The "Side clips" each have two screws in them that are slotted like a KEYHOLE to allow loosening the screws and simply slipping the metal pieces up and then off the screws.

The fire brick panels can be removed.

Get some more pix....especially one looking down at a bit of an angle into the fire pot.

My fire pot has a couple of mods done as we burn nut shells.

Yours will not have the bar in the center or the extra piece up the front.

    MORE PICCYS PLEASE

Thanks. I forwarded the request to the whitfield owner and am waiting on a response. He said he stopped by a wood stove store today and showed them the pic of the stove (same as the one posted above) and they said it looks OK and go ahead and fire it up. I think he may be trying to fire it up about now....

Here is a pic of the stuff in place of the firebrick board. Do you think it is OK/safe to light and use the stove with this stuff? The guy at the wood stove store told him go ahead and use the stove.

    OK

The fire pot is pretty skanky (Bottom of the grate burnt out)

The fire brick ( Backing should be fine)...Not factory type but should be OK

The fire pot is the older type (These are OK...but the newer Versa grate is a better grate)
The part of the grate where the pellets lay (Part that's burn out) should come out as is easily replaceable (New one just slides down into the main fire pot housing)

It is not going to hurt a thing to run it the way it is ...BUT IT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED
The fire tray is avaiable.. Don222 should be able to help you (EAST COAST HEARTH)

    The stove needs servicing..

A good vacuuming of the fire box and the entire unit should be cleaned up.

The normally used exhaust fan motors use sleeve bearings (Bronze bushing) and require a couple drops of oil in each oil hole on top of the motor (One at each end)
Oiling needs to be done every few months if the stove is used a lot.

The unit should be slid out of the fireplace and checked over (Vacuumed and serviced)
