Not sure how Virginia would [not be] considered a southern state. Per the earlier post, it is south of the Mason Dixon line. I think everyone of our Virginian Presidents, starting with the first one, considered themselves southerners. I believe Virginia has always held itself as a companion state to the states further south rather than any to the north, past and present.

I hear what you are saying about Virginia's physical position in the US not being all that far south, and in fact not as far south as some 'northern' states (or parts of states) but still, by all measures I can think of The Old Dominion is a southern state.

All of that said, it does get cold there. My son lives in northern VA and they had a snowstorm serious enough that he had a great deal of trouble digging his car out of it..... with a windshield ice- scraper.  That could be the state motto: "Virginia, not so far south it does not snow but too far south to own a snow shovel.". :D

not trying to speak for any one but in other countries teaching american geography.. they categorize Virginia as mid coastal state.. which includes states from NJ to NC.. but South is a relative term...

    Well, that makes sense.

As a native, I tend to think of places such as Virginia and Maryland as 'southern' states, with states such as the Carolina's, Georgia as 'deep south' states. Further, in my mind, I basically think of the US as having three general regions, North (which is Northeast), South (which is Southeast) and West, which is everything from the middle of the US or so and west. Now obviously that is not quite right because it lumps Kansas in with Montana and Nevada, sort of, but that is basically my mental snapshot of America.

When in Germany, I was given this map which I am told represents the German view of the American view of the entire world. Struck me as hilarious....

I've seen that pic BDF when I was travelling.. it's only funny because it's partially true.. other countries have a hard time comprehending our many states and local control when other countries (Australia and Canada per example) similar size and 7 to 11 state type districts.. I love our country also but it's not perfect.. As a teenager I traveled by car coast to coast amazing the number of people that did not know Vermont was a State!:picard: ... when travelling overseas I told many I lived 75 KM south of Montreal.. easier than explaining Vermont... 2 knew that wasn't in Canada.. bUT hey.. New York is more than NYC.. and they perceived gang wars and drive by shootings to be everyday occurrences... TV for you..

This is the time of year I usually split all my remaining porch stacked wood in half, then use it for tiny occasional three stick fires through mid May. I haven't gotten around to it this year. Built a two stick fire last night. That never works out very well.

I live on the south edge. It sure feels like it is the south when the humidity is 90% and the temp is 95. Currently the humidity is 84% and the temp is 78F. Not so hot but that humidity is what gets you. We got more rain the other night as if we needed any. The garden in the little valley is a mess.

On the burning front I think I am done for the season on that.

Just taking a break from working on the house, upstairs in the framed space. Outside temp. is 82.2, inside is a bit more (no insulation up there yet) and I am producing more water than the Coulee Dam.

Tonight it will go down to ~50F, and tomorrow's high is only going to be ~60F. So I am absolutely not done burning wood yet this year..... but not so much today. Today is an air- conditioner day. And this will continue here into June.... It is very common here in the spring and fall to ride to work with the car heater on, and drive home with the car A/C on.

I thought I was finished burning for the year but dang if it has not turned cold here again. Seems that some Canadian air has decided to move south. I have a nice fire going now and will probably need one tomorrow.

I am going to light a fire shortly, and this coming week it will drop into the high 30's F overnight. Like I said, we burn wood and use A/C not only in the same week, say, but now and again, in the same DAY (warm during the late afternoon, cold the next morning).

My stove has been going last two days. The nights are in the 35-32 range. I'm in southern Ohio but not the south.

I started a fire tonight and just fed it a few small splits; going to 40F tonight and I set- back the thermostats over the weekend so the house was really pretty chilly.

Turned cool down here. I decided I needed a fire so I can be comfy. I probably could have just put on a sweater and knit cap but why when I have a nice wood fuel stove.

Another cool wet day in May; 51F/10.6C. I needed a fire to take the chill off the house so I did.

Three days ago we set new temp. records at 96F and 93F on two consecutive days. I could not work on the second floor of my house because it was too hot.

Today I burned a bunch of cardboard that had accumulated and my wife was hugging the stove. We worked upstairs and she went and got a sweatshirt.....

In-between, there have been some really nice days- high 60's / low 70's, sunny and quite pleasant.

Off to start a small wood fire.... it is 54F here and pretty chilly in the house.

It was cold here yesterday; I did not build a fire because I was leaving for the day but it sure would have been nice. I had to wear a light jacket when I went out.

I have a fire burning now, with all this rain, it was just too chilly and damp in the house.

50F last night, lit a fire and used enough splits to keep it going overnight (very low though).

Now have air conditioning on to chase away the perspiration and cannot work upstairs 'cause it is like an oven up there..... only hot.

    Crazy New England weather.
