Just received my BaoFeng UV-5R. I know next to nothing about this stuff. As I have time I will learn the basics of it. Thank you for the information provided Well Seasoned .
Thx Space (other than what's between my ears ) has always been of interest to me. And YES.. I'd be one those that would risk it all for a mere glimpse of this beautiful home we have, from a much higher altitude Edit: Enter space cadet jokes here. vvv
Articles regarding the newest generation of EMP’s indicate the wavelengths are much smaller and therefore shielding must be made from sheets instead of foils. Reynolds might not offer enough protection. Maybe something like .030” strip, with brazed seams. Plenty of concern regarding the charging of batteries after the event, as well whether or not other folks have prepped themselves equally well. If there’s no one to pick up a signal, it will get lonely waiting.
Biggest problem is the solid state devices. Electricity is easy to create, batteries for storage notwithstanding. But yes, if your devices circuitry is fried your SOL As I mentioned, not one of the "serious" preppers, but I try to stay ahead of the rest of the herd.
Good reads there! We get the Aurora maybe twice a year. Sometimes we see it, oftentimes we don't and damm near freeze to death.
Good luck & take your time. I'm no expert here, just starting to get my feet wet. I've had the best luck on digital as far as long distance.
As you get deeper into the radio, your liking for space will be helpful. Yes different aspects of the sun give small windows of opportunity when it comes to amateur radio. Did you try the FM channels yet?
I use the aluminum foil kind of twisted up inside the seam of an ammo can. I forget what they are called, but there are bags that circuit boards come in, like the ones at work for the harman stoves. We just throw em out. Oh what are they called? They would probably add additional blocking power I'd think? I dunno. I keep some different items in there, small solar panels and rechargeable batteries, extra radios, but I may be just talking to myself if an event happened. Hmmm, I need to stock up on beer. I try, but someone always drinks it.
Anti-static bags. As to beer, I'll have to become a "clear liquid" drinker, homebrew seems out of my league at present.
Very true.. Although radio astronomy isn't quite the same as a telescope, many have used old sat dishes (the big ones) as receivers. Haven't messed much with FM, but I'm only a couple days in.
Ah.. Well I did have that on last night. Chazsbetterhalf made me listen to a Christmas song that was on.
Did anyone catch Face the Nation this morning? They had the panel list predictions of top stories in 2020. A panel member predicted US vulnerability in space as a top story, a major issue with satellites(s). That if a major one went down we would not know if it just broke or another country sabotaged it. And communications across the US would be down hitting the US in it's "center of gravity".
Another reason these radios are so important. It happens.... here a Russian satellite hit a few days ago by space debris. This was a weather satellite. Translated to English. Google Translate
