Have never seen so much flicker activity at the suet since the snowstorm on January 25. Before that a somewhat rare sight.
She claimed to have seen six at once out there. They've grown more accustomed to us as they're very skittish. Once they see you away they fly.
Ms. buZZsaw spotted this red tailed hawk just off our deck. I threw three snowballs at it and it barely flinched. It was there again the next day. Turns out it was foraging some meat scraps I had thrown out for the night time critters. The bird feeder maybe 50' away in back of the house.
We had this Cooper’s Hawk show up in our lilac, 10’ from the front door. It sat right next to the thistle feeder for half an hour or so. The little birds didn't seem to mind it at all, but the two red squirrels were quite vocal about it being nearby.
Thanks! While making dinner last night one of the owls flew into the backyard and perched on top of an apple tree. Sat there for 20 minutes or so before taking off. Best photo I could get as it was getting dark. It’s about 30’ from the window.
The snow pack here is so deep/high, that the squirrels are able to easily jump over the baffle and get to the feeders. Grrr..
Not here thankfully. I did a dum dum thing the other day and forgot to put the lid back on the pail I keep the sunflower seed in. Squirrel was having a feast the other day when I discovered my goof.
I had to adjust a baffle for the same reason. Knocked off the snow and made it slippery so now they have to earn it!
I started snow blowing around the bird feeder pole to keep the squirrels from jumping past the baffle. The red squirrel kept trying for almost an hour to make the jump, would land half on the baffle and then slide off. Reposition to a slightly different launching spot and try again. Finally got tired and left. We run into them in the back woods every so often. They really like to hunt on the skidding trails, while I’m hauling logs out of the woods. In the summer we can sit in the backyard and listen to 4 or 5 of them hooting as the sun sets. I need to build some owl nesting boxes and scatter around the property.
I don't call myself a bird watcher but I got a pic of this little guy trying to get to the suet while we were getting pounded with the Nor'Easter. Not sure what he is, but I'll give him a big thumbs up for his tenacity That is a suet cage and he made a hole in the back.
I keep the area around my bird feeders and a nearby shrub snow blown / shoveled. I throw a bit of seed around the feeder for the squirrels and some around the shrub for the ground feeding birds like juncos and cardinals. I don't have baffles around the birdfeeder but did trim down some saplings that they could jump from to get to the feeder. There is one squirrel that can get to the feeder, but none of the others have made it yet. This year the seed hogs are the starlings that show up in a big flock every day to empty out the birdfeeder and scoop up the ground seeds.
Chris got a shot of this little wood pecker on the suet this morning. It's been a long winter for them also...
