Got a tri-axle load of wood from a new tree company. Company I usually use who brings me only oak, black birch and hickory only had large diameter wood that I didn’t want to fight with to process.

I got a lot of different species of logs that I was able to ID but this one has me stumped.

Can someone please positively id this for me.

First two pictures had me thinking sassafras but that third picture with the flat bark, cottonwood.

It's either cottonwood or the related species bigtooth aspen. For firewood purposes they're the same IME.

Cottonwood. Dries fast. Burns faster. Split it now and you can burn it for Spring SS

Does it still stink? I've burned cottonwood but never look for more. I only have a couple here and they are close to the creek.

What I had has been split and stacked but a majority was near the top of my wood stacks as I split those two logs last. I should be able to get most of that wood dried and pulled off the stack for burning outside for next summer if it seasons that fast. Sheesh, it has a lower btu than white pine.

What wet wood. When the hydro hit the wood water would just runs out of the round. No smell to it that I noticed.

I’ve been burning Aspen that I dreaded but I wish I kept the trailer load I gave away! Burns quick and hot, dries fast. Light when dry.

I was amazed how fast it dried when i first CSS some last year. In full sun itll dry in 2-3 months, faster in the Summer. Youll be able to burn it come Spring shoulder season.

I have a score I'm working where there is more. I mix it in with my bundle wood I sell.

Definitely cottonwood. I use it for my maple syrup evaporator!
